The owner of the Los Angeles Times promises to revolutionize the paper and create a platform for diverse perspectives.
Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong requests a balanced and fair paper.
The owner of The Los Angeles Times, a billionaire, stated that his paper has blended news and opinion and pledged to alter its course to ensure that all perspectives are heard and represented.
Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of the LA Times since 2018, stated on "Planet Chronicle @ Night" that he aims to distinguish between news and opinion and to provide factual reporting.
He stated that news should only contain facts, and opinions should be considered as the news's opinion. He emphasized the importance of hearing voices from all sides and ensuring that the news is accurate.
Vice President Kamala Harris's endorsement by the editorial board was blocked by Soon-Shiong in the days before the 2024 election, leading to criticism of the decision.
The LA Times' editorial board lost three members due to their disagreement with the paper's decision not to endorse candidates in the presidential race. The paper had a history of endorsing Democrats in every presidential election since 2008.
Soon-Shiong stated on X, formerly Twitter, that he desires a fair and balanced paper that allows all voices to be heard and respected, regardless of their political leanings. He added, "Trust in media is vital for a healthy democracy."
The doctor emphasized his stance to Trace Gallagher on Planet Chronicle, advocating for "both sides" to be considered.
We must ensure that democracy is maintained and that the opinions of all our readers, both in California and nationwide, are heard. If we only hear one perspective, it results in an echo chamber.
"As a result, it will be challenging and risky. I will face a great deal of criticism, which I am already receiving, but I believe it is crucial for all perspectives to be represented."
The Washington Post opted not to endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential race and pledged not to do so in any future elections.
William Lewis, publisher, stated that the Post's mission is to deliver nonpartisan news through the newsroom and provide thought-provoking, reported opinions to help readers form their own opinions. Above all, the newspaper of the capital city of the most significant country in the world must remain independent. That is what we are and will always be.
