Washington Post fact-checked Nancy Pelosi's claim that "fewer" migrants crossed the border under Biden.
Pelosi asserted that it was not clear enough that fewer individuals entered under President Joe Biden than under Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, the Washington Post fact-checked former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's statement that fewer migrants entered the U.S. under President Biden than under President-elect Trump's first term.
"Pelosi admitted that they were not clear enough in their message about the number of people who came in under President Joe Biden compared to President Donald Trump, according to a recent interview with the New York Times."
On Wednesday, The Washington Post published a fact-check on the claim that "at least four times as many migrants entered the United States under Biden than under Trump."
According to the Post, a source close to Pelsoi stated that the interview was about deportations and cited statistics from a Reuters report.
The Washington Post's report stated that while Biden was on track to surpass the number of deportations in any single year under Trump in fiscal year 2024, the article did not suggest that deportations under Biden would be higher than they were under Trump. In fact, through four years, Biden is likely to have fewer deportations than Trump, according to the Reuters count.
The outlet reported that Pelosi's claim "deviates even further" when they examine the figures and stated that the former House Speaker received "Four Pinocchio's."
In the same interview with The New York Times, Pelosi expressed the view that Vice President Harris could have potentially won the election if Biden had withdrawn earlier.
If the president had left office earlier, there might have been other contenders in the race. Kamala, in my opinion, would have remained the winner, but she may have been more powerful, as she would have had more time to present her case to the public.
Over the weekend, Symone Sanders Townsend criticized Pelosi for her part in Biden's decision to drop out of the presidential race.
"Nancy Pelosi is known for her strategic abilities and counting skills while she was the speaker in Congress, but I wonder where her calculator is now that she has played in presidential politics this cycle and helped orchestrate the public demise of the president."
