Dem Rep. criticizes Harris campaign for relying on celebrity endorsements: "No one cares"
The lawmaker acknowledged that Dems may be "out of touch" with celebrity support, stating, "Yeah... it’s not the life I’m living."
On Friday, Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, criticized his party for using high-profile celebrity endorsements during the 2024 election cycle.
On "CNN This Morning," Landsman argued that the Kamala Harris campaign's reliance on celebrity endorsements to win over voters was a poor strategy because the average American is uninterested in celebrity support.
The lawmaker told CNN anchor Kasie Hunt that no one cares about the voting preferences of some celebrities, as long as they produce good movies and music.
A virtual voter focus group meeting was shown to Landsman, prompting him to criticize the Democratic Party for its lack of authenticity and reliance on Hollywood elites to sell their message.
One voter stated that the celebrity endorsement should be removed because it has become a "star-studded circus" and everyone is laughing.
Another voter advised Democrats to "engage with the grassroots and connect with the people" in order to secure future victories.
Hunt was informed by Landsman that he concurred and heeded the calls for moderation from members of his own community.
He stated that he had stopped using social media for a while, which meant no Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok. However, he now has accounts and posts content, but he no longer scrolls through them. He also mentioned his work accounts.
I gather all my information from people, whether it's on the soccer field, at the grocery store, or at our town hall, and what I consistently hear is 'Do the work,' 'please be normal,' and 'be pragmatic.'
"The center-left and center-right working together is what we want, and that's where we'll solve problems, he said. He then added that the voters' perspective on celebrity endorsements is "hilarious, because it is true.""
Landsman replied, "Yeah, I suspect if you’re hanging out with these celebrities, it’s not the life I’m living, so yeah sure, that feels different."
This election cycle, the Harris campaign obtained several high-profile celebrity endorsements, including Beyoncé, Cardi B, Usher, Bruce Springsteen, and others, in an effort to persuade the public to support Harris.
Despite Taylor Swift's endorsement of Harris, Trump still won re-election in a landslide. This has led some to question whether Swift's cultural power is diminished when it comes to politics.
"But for real, Taylor Swift doesn't have the juice like that," Schulz remarked. "She doesn't!" Charlamagne replied.
