During the 2024 Emmys, Candice Bergen made a jab at JD Vance by referencing the character of Murphy Brown.
At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Candice Bergen referenced her own controversy with a politician while presenting the best lead actress trophy.
At the 2024 Emmy Awards on Sunday, JD Vance was criticized by Candice Bergen in a not-so-subtle jab while presenting an award.
During the presentation of the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award, "Murphy Brown" star, 78, referenced a controversial plotline from the 1990s sitcom, where her character became pregnant and planned to raise her child as a single mother. The storyline was criticized at the time, with then-Vice President Dan Quayle condemning it for glorifying the breakdown of traditional family values.
Bergen played the lead in a comedy series called Murphy Brown for 11 years.
"I was surrounded by talented and amusing actors, had exceptional scripts to work with, and in a memorable scene, my character was assaulted by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy conceived and opted to raise the child as a single mother."
"Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would not attack a woman for having children," she joked.
"As they say, my work here is done. Meow!" Bergen added.
In 2021, Vance made a remark that the U.S. was being run by "childless cat ladies" who were "miserable" and wanted to make others miserable. He later defended the remark as a "joke" that was "willfully misinterpreted" by Democrats, but it has since become a favorite line of attack by Trump critics after the former president announced him as his running mate in July.
Bergen's remarks appeared to compare Vance and Quayle, who criticized CBS and Bergen for "mocking the significance of fathers by giving birth alone and portraying it as simply another lifestyle choice" in a 1992 speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco.
The "Murphy Brown Speech" was given in response to the Rodney King riots, which the speaker attributed, in part, to the decline of the "traditional" family structure.
Quayle stated that the portrayal of Murphy Brown, a character who represents the modern intelligent and well-paid professional woman, mocking the significance of fathers by having a child alone and referring to it as a lifestyle choice, does not aid the situation.
During her speech at the 76th Emmy Awards, Selena Gomez joked about working with her "Only Murders in the Building" co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, who are "this far away from being childless cat ladies."
Taylor Swift, a cat owner, endorsed Kamala Harris and included a photo of herself with her feline companion.
