Texas Governor Abbott stands firm against the Biden administration during the ongoing conflict over an island utilized by cartels.
Mexican drug cartels have utilized Fronton Island as a criminal activity base, according to Texas.
Gov. Abbott of Texas has pledged to disregard the Biden administration's orders to remove structures on an island that local officials claim is a hub for Mexican drug cartels.
Abbott wrote to President Biden and Vice President Harris on Monday, stating that the USIBWC instructed the Texas GLO to restore Fronton Island to its original state.
The 170-acre island on the Rio Grande, which lies on the border between the U.S. and Mexico, has been the site of various criminal activities, including gunfights and illegal immigration.
For years, the cartels were rampant in Fronton Island's thick vegetation and bullet-pocked structures along the river, engaging in illegal activities such as staging entries, surveilling law enforcement, stashing weapons, planting explosives, evading capture, and engaging in open warfare against rival cartels and officers.
He stated that authorities discovered six assault rifles, a grenade launcher, a rocket launcher, 20 ammunition magazines for various-sized weapons, and three packages of what appeared to be C-4 plastic explosives hidden on the Island.
"In another location, Texas soldiers discovered an improvised explosive device concealed among a collection of weapons and semi-automatic rifle ammunition."
Local authorities have granted permission to the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Rangers to patrol and police the island.
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham previously stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that law enforcement discovered ammunition and suspicious devices on it. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that Texas law enforcement has access to these islands to secure the border during the border crisis.
In 2021, Abbott launched Operation Lone Star, a determined initiative to combat the influx of illegal immigrants and drugs into Texas from Mexico. The Texas National Guard and law enforcement have erected razor wire fencing and other barriers along the border, and have deployed buoys on the Rio Grande to make it more challenging to cross.
The USIBWC, a joint body formed by the U.S. and Mexican governments, regulates the southern border and has constructed two sediment bridges, placed concertina wire, and cleared vegetation on the island, according to Abbott.
The Biden administration and Abbott have differing opinions on the ownership of the island; while the former claims it is federal land, the latter believes it belongs to Texas.
"Your open-border policies have led to an invasion at the southern border and encouraged criminal behavior that endangers the lives of Texas law enforcement, soldiers, and citizens. Despite creating a crisis, the federal government has refused to enforce federal laws, even in dangerous areas like Fronton Island."
The IBWC, White House, and Abbott's office have been contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital.
The clashes between Abbott and the Biden administration have arisen due to Texas' successful acquisition of the island in October, which was used by Mexican drug cartels as a base.
"Texas has long been plagued by violence on Fronton Island. Now, the Biden-Harris administration wants to return it to its previous state. I informed Biden and Harris that Texas will not comply with their demands."
