Video footage captures Mississippi teen suspect following alleged murder of mother.
A 15-year-old girl, Carly Gregg, is being tried for the alleged murder of her mother and injury of her stepdad.
A Mississippi teen murder suspect appeared nonchalant in a chilling video after allegedly shooting and killing her mother, with the girl seen texting following the act.
The footage of the kitchen during the trial of Carly Gregg, who was 15 at the time of the murder of her mother Ashley Smylie on March 19, showed the moments leading up to and following the alleged murder. At the time of the murder, Gregg was 14 and is accused of using a .357 Magnum pistol to kill Smylie.
A video clip depicts Gregg concealing something from her and advancing towards her bedroom right before three gunshots are heard.
After the alleged murder, Gregg leisurely walked back to the kitchen and sat on a stool. The family's two Labrador retrievers trailed behind him to the kitchen area following the gunshots.
In her trial, it was stated that Gregg sent a text message to Heath Smylie, her stepdad, following the murder in an attempt to entice him back home and attack him.
On Tuesday, Heath Smylie testified that when he opened the kitchen door, the gun went off in his face before the door was even three to four inches wide open, and everything happened quickly after that.
"Gregg pointed a gun at me and it went off three times," Heath said. "I grabbed the gun after the first shot and twisted it from Carly." Heath was shot in his shoulder during the encounter with Gregg, police said.
Heath stated that his stepdaughter was "screaming like she had seen a demon" and was "terrified."
"She appeared terrified," he stated. "She was shrieking in terror, as if she had witnessed a demon or something equally frightening."
On Monday, Kathryn White Newman, the assistant DA of Rankin County, stated that Ashley Smylie, a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, learned from a friend of Gregg's earlier that day that she was smoking marijuana and had burner phones. Upon arriving home, she discovered vape pens in her daughter's bedroom.
An adult was charged with Gregg for murder, attempted murder, and tampering with evidence.
She rejected a 40-year prison sentence plea deal and her defense team pleaded insanity, according to the Clarion Ledger.
