Two Massachusetts corrections officers were stabbed by inmates, prompting the union to claim that they are effectively running the asylum.
Trouble breaks out at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley.
At a Massachusetts prison, two corrections officers were stabbed and three others were injured during an attack, prompting a labor union to declare that the "inmates are literally running the asylum."
On Thursday, the Massachusetts Department of Correction revealed that the assault at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley took place approximately 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Incarcerated individuals attacked two correction officers, causing multiple stab wounds. Three additional correction officers were injured while responding to the incident. One of the victims is still hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
"The Department has initiated a thorough investigation to establish the facts and circumstances and is also conducting a comprehensive security assessment. Additionally, the incarcerated males implicated in this incident have been relocated to other DOC facilities."
The interim commissioner of the agency, Shawn Jenkins, stated, "At this time, my thoughts are with the officers and their families, and the Department extends its full support to the officers as they recover from their injuries."
He stated that violence against DOC staff is unacceptable and that they will take the necessary steps to hold those responsible accountable under the law.
The Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union posted on Facebook, "Four years have passed since the DOC authorized the use of tactical units and conducted a comprehensive search throughout the institution."
"What more must our members suffer before you take action to protect them? The inmates are in control of the asylum. Perform your duties," the post stated.
At a press conference on Thursday, Dennis Martin, the president of the labor union, stated that the incident was an attempted murder on a correctional officer in the facility.
"This isn't Hollywood; this is reality, as it unfolds daily in these institutions," he stated.
Martin stated that the attack "seemed to be coordinated" as "the attacker's intent was not just to send a warning, but to kill the victim."
