An elderly woman in Washington state was taken into custody for a possible hate crime after a confrontation with Trump backers.
A 82-year-old woman was arrested for a suspected hate crime and assault after she allegedly punched two supporters of now President-elect Trump, with the interaction caught on camera.
On Monday, Nov. 4, a day before the general election, a group of Trump supporters gathered at an intersection in Edmonds, Washington.
An 82-year-old suspect, who was not publicly identified by police, was accused of pushing and punching two females, aged 55 and 66, following a verbal dispute, according to the Edmonds Police Department.
Police were dispatched shortly after 1 p.m. for reports of an assault.
They arrived to find an 82-year-old woman interacting with several Trump supporters.
The 82-year-old suspect is seen explaining her actions to law enforcement in police body camera footage obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital.
She replied, "Because I'm brown-skinned."
"As a former teacher, I despise the racism in this country. I am appalled by the way people are treated, and so I wondered how a person of color could support such behavior," she exclaimed. "Instantly, she began yelling, 'racist, racist!'"
""I pushed her away without difficulty, as I didn't help the situation," she stated."
The 55-year-old woman disclosed to officers that the elderly woman had confronted her, made derogatory comments about her appearance, and then physically assaulted her.
An 82-year-old suspect punched a 66-year-old Edmonds woman who intervened when she saw what was happening.
Multiple individuals were interviewed by officers as part of their investigation into the incident.
The suspect was arrested for hate crime and assault and did not express any regret during the interrogation.
Our community's constitution safeguards peaceful rallies, and no one should face violence while exercising those rights. After careful examination, Edmonds Police Department Chief Michelle Bennett stated that this incident involved more than a simple assault and charged the suspect accordingly.
