A gunfire incident occurred on a Spirit Airlines flight while it was attempting to land in Haiti.
Despite months of UN assistance, Haiti continues to experience a surge in gang violence.
On Monday, a Spirit Airlines flight arriving in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was hit by gunfire during landing.
The airline's representative informed Planet Chronicle Digital that flight 951 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was rerouted to Santiago, Dominican Republic, following a gunfire attack. The plane landed safely.
Upon landing in the Dominican Republic, a post-flight inspection uncovered signs of gunfire damage to the aircraft.
One flight attendant on the aircraft sustained minor injuries and was being evaluated by medical personnel, despite none of the guests on board being harmed.
Since the aircraft is no longer operational, Spirit is arranging for a different plane to transport guests and crew back to Fort Lauderdale.
The airline has suspended its service at Port-au-Prince (PAP) and Cap-Haitien (CAP) due to safety concerns, prioritizing the well-being of guests and team members.
The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince stated that it is aware of gang-led attempts to impede travel to and from the city, which may involve armed violence and interference with roads, ports, and airports.
"The U.S. Embassy stated that the security situation in Haiti is uncertain and hazardous, and advised travelers to exercise caution when moving around the country."
The U.S. government cannot assure the safety of American citizens while traveling to airports, borders, or abroad in Haiti.
It is advised by the embassy to prioritize personal safety when traveling in Haiti.
On the same day Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille was removed from office after six months, safety warnings were issued.
