Barrow County schools see increased police presence ahead of student return in Georgia.
Georgia district resumes classes on Tuesday, but students are not obligated to attend.
This week, students are returning to classes in Barrow County, and Georgia police are increasing security measures at schools in response to the Apalachee High School shooting.
School administrators have announced that classes will resume on Tuesday, but students who are not ready to return do not have to. District Superintendent Dallas LeDuff confirmed the increased police presence in a statement last week.
LeDuff stated that it is necessary for us to be reunited at the earliest opportunity in order to progress and offer a sense of comfort to our students.
"We understand these are trying times, and we are here to assist you," he stated. "We will provide additional assistance and safety, including increased law enforcement presence, at all of our schools."
The Barrow County Sheriff's Office declined to comment on the heightened security measures and their duration when contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital.
According to Fox5 Atlanta, hundreds of people gathered for a vigil to pay tribute to the deceased.
The four victims of the shooting were identified as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, and math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie by the police.
