On Wednesday, a man suspected of planning a mass shooting at a Jewish center in New York City in the name of ISIS was arrested in Canada.

A Pakistani national living in Canada, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 20, has been accused of providing support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.

"The FBI Director Christopher Wray stated that the defendant was allegedly determined to kill Jewish people in the US, one year after Hamas's attack on Israel. The investigation was led by the FBI and the team's work was terrific in disrupting Khan's plan."

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested Khan on a warrant issued by the Southern District of New York for providing material support to terrorism.

"According to U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, Khan aimed to travel to the United States and execute a terrorist attack targeting Jewish people, with the goal of maximizing casualties, all in the name of ISIS. Khan's alleged actions serve as a stark reminder of the need to remain vigilant in the ongoing battle against antisemitism and terror."

Thanks to our law enforcement partners and career prosecutors, Khan's alleged plan was disrupted before he reached the United States. This Office will stop at nothing to root out and bring to justice anyone who seeks to harm our community.

Since last November, Khan had planned the attack in Brooklyn using encrypted messaging apps, the Department of Justice stated in a news release, adding that he distributed pro-ISIS propaganda and videos and literature.

He unknowingly began communicating with two undercover officers, revealing his plans to create an offline cell of ISIS supporters and carry out a coordinated assault using AR-style assault rifles, targeting Israeli Jewish chabads scattered throughout an unnamed city other than New York.

It is claimed that he instructed undercover officers to acquire AR-style guns, ammunition, and other equipment for the planned assault on the city, specifying the precise locations where the shootings would occur.

He instructed the officers to acquire "some good hunting knives" to "slit their throats."

"October 7th and October 11th are the best days for targeting Jews because October 7th will have protests and October 11th is Yom Kippur," Khan allegedly told the officers.

Khan stated that he intended to target a Jewish center in Brooklyn, New York around August 20.

"New York is the ideal location to target Jews because it has the largest Jewish population in America. Even if we don't attack an event, we could easily accumulate a significant number of Jews," Khan allegedly said, adding, "we are heading to New York City to slaughter them."

He included one statement in his communication: "Our plan's success would represent the largest attack on US soil since 9/11."

"Ron Kissane, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force stated in a video update on social media that "terrorism has no place in our society." He added, "This case highlights the dedication of our joint Terrorism Task Force in New York City to relentlessly work to thwart terror plots before they can be executed.""

Merrick B. Garland, the Attorney General, stated that Khan had planned the attack near Oct. 7, the anniversary of Hamas' unprovoked attack on Israel, with the intention of killing as many Jewish people as possible in the name of ISIS.

"The Justice Department will continue to work closely with domestic and international partners to aggressively counter the threat posed by ISIS and other terrorist organizations and their supporters, ensuring that Jewish communities, like all communities in this country, are not targeted by hate-fueled terrorist attacks."
