Venmo requests for money after loss have been sent to Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne by sports bettors.
As sports betting becomes more widespread, interactions with athletes like this are increasingly common.
Venmo requests from college football bettors asking Auburn Tigers quarterback Payton Thorne to send them money after losing to the California Golden Bears on Saturday have been revealed by Thorne.
Numerous interactions between athletes and fans have resulted from legalized sports betting, with most of them being unpleasant as fans lose money based on the athlete's performance.
Auburn's Tigers lost to the Golden Bears, 21-14, at home on Saturday, leaving Thorne and his team at 1-1 on the season.
Thorne disclosed on "The Next Round" that he receives criticism from fans and is frequently asked to pay back bets through his Venmo account.
"Thorne stated that they are not sending cash as they want their money back when they lose it, but they never send any money when they win on a parlay."
In the current sports-betting era, with numerous advertisements for betting apps during broadcasts and on social media, it is likely that fans will continue to make inappropriate comments towards athletes like Thorne.
The quarterback knows how to ignore criticism and outside noise while walking down the street.
He emphasized the importance of returning to one's foundation in life, which for him is his faith and family. He advised focusing on both the past and the future while doing so.
Thorne is in his fifth year of college, his second with the Tigers, after spending his first three years at Michigan State. Despite a strong showing in the victory over Alabama A&M, Thorne had a subpar performance, completing only 14 out of 27 passes with one touchdown and four interceptions.
He threw four touchdowns and no interceptions in the win over A&M.
This week, New Mexico will be the opponents for Thorne and the Tigers as they aim to recover from their previous loss at home.
