The 49ers are stunned by the Vikings as Sam Darnold delivers a strong performance with two more touchdowns.
Justin Jefferson scored a 97-yard touchdown after being hit by Darnold.
On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers were hosted by the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium, but the Vikings paid no attention to the star-studded group and emerged victorious with a 23-17 win, moving their record to 2-0.
The 49ers, with a 1-1 record, had just given a standout performance against the New York Jets on "Monday Night Football," with Jordan Mason, replacing the injured Christian McCaffrey, delivering an electrifying display.
The electricity in this building is being powered by Sam Darnold, who is currently performing exceptionally well in Minnesota.
In his Week 2 victory, Darnold had two more touchdown passes than he did in his Week 1 win against the New York Giants, and one of them was something the Vikings hadn't done since 2008.
The team's longest touchdown since 2008 was a 97-yard score that Darnold connected with veteran receiver Justin Jefferson, who later left the game with a quad injury in the second half.
Jalen Nailor scored the game-winning touchdown for Darnold, who finished the game 17-of-26 for 268 yards.
Although Brock Purdy had a decent game, throwing for 319 yards on 28-of-36, the 49ers failed to convert their red zone trips into scores, with Purdy throwing for only one touchdown and Mason scoring one as well.
The 49ers struggled with third-down conversions, converting only 2 out of 10 attempts, as Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores employed various blitzes to disrupt Purdy.
In the second half, the Vikings forced a game-changing turnover when Purdy threw an interception, which was picked off by Metellus and returned to San Fran’s 10-yard line. This set up Darnold’s pass to Nailor in the end zone, making it 20-7 midway through the third quarter.
Mason had another impressive game for San Fran, with a total of 100 yards on 20 carries. Meanwhile, the Vikings set the pace with 146 team yards, with Ty Chandler leading the way with 82 yards on 10 carries.
Jefferson did not complete the game on the field for Minnesota, but his four catches totaled 133 yards, leading the game. Samuel Sr. led the 49ers in receiving with 110 yards on eight receptions.
George Kittle was the only player to score a touchdown through reception, with a total of seven catches for 76 yards.
