Sophie Cunningham dismisses pregame fitness criticism, reveals mom's approval of 'tan lines' dress
Before Thursday's game against Washington, Cunningham vowed to deliver another "feisty" performance.
Sophie Cunningham, the Phoenix Mercury guard, is making a statement both on and off the court.
The Mercury secured their 14th playoff appearance in the past 16 seasons with a 74-66 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday night. However, Cunningham had already gained notoriety after one of her pregame outbursts went viral on social media last week.
The WNBA player wore a "Love Island" inspired dress that showcased her summer tan lines during the Mercury's game against the Liberty on Aug. 26. While some fans on social media criticized the look, Cunningham stated in an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital that the outfit was approved by her mother.
Cunningham chuckled as he said, "I was just conversing with someone and I exclaimed, 'In reality, my mom selected that outfit,'"
The tan line reveal sparked controversy, with many commenting on it. However, when asked about it, she said that it was actually her mom's doing, but she had no idea.
The WNBA has experienced a surge in viewership and attendance this season, and fans are increasingly interested in the players, not just the game.
"It's amazing that people are now interested in what we wear off the court. Our tunnel fits have become a fashion show, and everyone is eager to see what we'll wear next."
Since then, Cunningham has continued to attract attention with her pregame style. In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, she revealed that her outfit for Thursday's game against the Washington Mystics will be "bold."
She said that tomorrow she would reveal a new fit that she hasn't done before, which represents Quest, and it will be feisty and sassy, hoping to turn some heads.
Quest Nutrition recently partnered with Cunningham to launch a new line of protein-packed bakeshop-inspired snacks.
"As a pro athlete, fueling your body is crucial, and it's a lifestyle choice," she said. "Quest does an excellent job of ensuring you eat well and fuel your body without sacrificing taste or feeling guilty about indulging in treats like brownies."
Phoenix is set to host Washington on Thursday at 10 p.m. ET.
