LSU coach Brian Kelly slams fist on table after 'unacceptable' loss to USC: 'It’s ridiculous'
Kelly criticized his team for their 'lack of discipline' in the 27-20 loss.
LSU football coach Brian Kelly was unable to conceal his emotions during his media conference on Sunday night after USC took advantage of what Kelly described as a lack of self-control in the 27-20 defeat.
During his postgame presser, Kelly expressed his frustration with the team, citing several personal fouls that gave the Trojans scoring opportunities and an offense that failed to convert in the red zone.
"We had some guys give it their all tonight, and we're back here again – back here again discussing the same topics! About not finishing when you have an opponent in a position to end it, but what we're doing on the sidelines feels like the game has already ended," an animated Kelly exclaimed.
"I'm so angry about my poor coaching performance that I must take action. My team's failure to win the football game is unacceptable, and I must improve my coaching skills to find a solution. This is ridiculous."
In the third quarter, LSU led USC by four points. However, with two minutes remaining, USC tied the game, giving Miller Moss and Kyron Hudson the opportunity to put the Trojans within field goal range.
The LSU 13 was reached by Woody Marks after Jardin Gilbert was called for targeting, resulting in a winning score for the Trojans.
Kelly expressed his frustration with our football team, stating that it was the first time since his arrival that he was angry. He pointed out that our team did not play complementary football from a big picture perspective. However, what concerned him the most were the personal fouls, which he considered selfish and undisciplined. These penalties led to scores, and Kelly felt that they were a major issue.
"Despite our efforts to maintain a disciplined program, it seems we have not been successful enough, as it has negatively affected the game."
"It's disappointing that we missed the chance to eliminate the team because we became complacent and made more mistakes when we were leading, instead of maintaining a better focus and a deadly instinct."
The Tigers are struggling this season, with three consecutive season-opening losses under coach Brian Kelly and a five-game losing streak overall. LSU's four-game winning streak from last season was also snapped.
