Lawrence Taylor's claim that Giants legends would have excelled against the Vikings, as revealed by Carl Banks.
Daniel Jones & Co. struggled at MetLife Stadium while Taylor and Banks observed.
The 28-6 loss of the New York Giants to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 has left fans in a state of turmoil, but it's not just the fans who are feeling the emotional whirlwind.
Former players are frustrated too, including one of the franchise's legends.
The Giants honored several team legends at the stadium during their 100th season, while wearing their century red uniforms.
Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks were two crucial players on the Giants teams that won Super Bowl titles in 1987 and 1991. Taylor was ranked first among the 100 greatest Giants ever, while Banks came in 17th.
On the "Bleav in Giants" podcast, Banks disclosed that Taylor expressed a desire to put his pads back on after watching the first half of the Giants' game against the Vikings.
Lawrence Taylor, a man who rarely speaks about games because he doesn't watch many of them, was the one who stood out to me when we were being introduced as the top 100 players. He looked at me and, in a true story, shared what we were thinking at halftime.
"Lawrence looked at me at halftime and said, "I could pick 22 of us right now and go out and play better than these guys. We'd be in this game." The youngest guy in that line was probably 50 years old. Lawrence Taylor looked at me and said, "I can get 22 of us right now and go out there right now and whoop these guys' a--.""
Since the 2011 NFL season, the championship pedigree of the Giants hasn't been seen in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The team has only made the playoffs twice since then, with the most recent appearance occurring during head coach Brian Daboll's inaugural season in 2022.
The Giants' locker room does not look like a championship team after their poor performance on Sunday, with quarterback Daniel Jones and the offense receiving boos as they left the field without scoring any touchdowns.
In Week 1, Giants fans have been targeting Jones after he went 22-for-42 for 186 yards with two interceptions and got sacked five times in the loss. As he enters his sixth season and the second year of his four-year, $160 million deal, Jones is expected to lead the Giants back to the playoffs like he did in 2022.
In his first game after tearing his ACL midway through the 2023 campaign, Jones seems to have regressed.
In Week 2, the Giants face the Washington Commanders, who were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1.
The crowd in MetLife Stadium saw Taylor, a former linebacker, wanting to aid his old team because they lacked grit and fight.
"To begin the season with the same appearance as you did on both sides of the ball, you appear to be stuck in 2023," Banks remarked.
