A 21-year-old Division II football player has died after being shot during a home invasion, according to police.
West Virginia State's senior linebacker, Jyilek Zyiare Harrington, was a standout player.
In Charleston, West Virginia, a Division II football player was fatally shot during a home invasion, as per the Associated Press.
On Wednesday, an apartment building in West Virginia State was the site of a shooting that left 21-year-old linebacker Jyilek Zyiare Harrington as the victim.
According to the AP, Lt. Tony Hazelett of the Charleston police department stated that "a disturbance occurred in a hallway and inside an apartment, resulting in several gunshots being fired."
When first responders arrived at the scene, Harrington was declared dead after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
Ericke S. Cage, president of West Virginia State, expressed condolences to Jyilek's family in a letter to the school's students and faculty, stating that their thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve the loss of this remarkable young man.
Nate Burton, vice president of intercollegiate athletics, stated that Jyilek was a prime example of a student-athlete and a community leader. He added that Jyilek was a young man who, during Christmas, would create a GoFundMe to help less fortunate families.
At present, the police have no information on a potential suspect.
In his final year at WVS, Harrington played a crucial role in the team's victory over Barton College last week, with eight tackles and a sack.
In its home opener against Carson-Newman, WVS will observe a moment of silence for Harrington, a former student who previously attended the college and also played at Division II Erskine College.
Harrington's charitable work will be continued through the distribution of donations to an organization in Charlotte, as stated by Burton, who added that the funds were created by the athletic department in his memory.
