While obesity rates in the US have stopped growing for the first time in a decade, the prevalence of severe obesity continues to rise, according to the CDC.
Despite no rise in overall obesity rate, the rate of severe obesity kept increasing.
Although the overall obesity rate among US adults has remained constant, the prevalence of severe obesity has risen, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The rate of obesity among US adults was approximately 40.3% between August 2021 and August 2023, according to a report compiled by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics.
In 2020, the rate of obesity among adults was 41.9%.
Although the slight decrease in obesity rate is insufficient to reverse the country's epidemic, it represents a significant departure from previous trends.
Since 2011, the percentage of U.S. adults battling obesity has been steadily increasing, according to CDC reports.
Despite a decrease in general obesity rates, the rate of severe obesity is still rising.

Despite the direction of the obesity crisis, the rate remains too high, according to the CDC.
The CDC reported that the age-adjusted prevalence of severe obesity in adults increased from 7.7% to 9.7% from 2013–2014 through August 2021–August 2023, while the age-adjusted prevalence of obesity in adults did not change significantly.
Individuals with a BMI of 30 or higher are considered obese, while those with a BMI of 40 or higher are classified as severely obese.
"The CDC found that the prevalence of severe obesity in men (6.7%) was lower than in women (12.1%) overall and for each age group. In men, the highest prevalence was among those aged 40-59, while in women, the highest prevalence was among those aged 20-39 and 40-59, and lowest among those aged 60 and older."
The objective of the CDC's national "Healthy People 2030" plan is to assist individuals in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
"The goal of "Healthy People 2030" is to decrease the obesity rate to less than 38.6% by 2030, but the issue is worsening."
