A 44-year-old Customs and Border Protection agent who was killed in a shootout with armed suspects on Monday has been identified as David Maland, according to a source from the U.S. Border Patrol.
On Monday, a veteran agent passed away following a traffic stop on Interstate 91 between Newport and Orleans, Vermont, around 3:15 p.m. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the incident occurred approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border.
"In a statement, acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman announced the death of a Border Patrol agent assigned to the Swanton Sector who was fatally shot while on duty. Huffman emphasized the daily risks taken by Border Patrol agents to ensure the safety and security of Americans and their homeland."
One suspect was killed and another injured in a shootout with Maland, resulting in their arrest by the FBI.
The suspects' immigration status was not immediately available.
A suspect's body was visible in the background while remote-controlled robots were seen inspecting a backpack and other gear.
On Monday, the Vermont State Police shut down Interstate 91 in both directions near mile marker 168 for several hours. Eventually, they reopened only the northbound lane.
The FBI's Albany branch is investigating.
