On Turks and Caicos vacation, a stray bullet kills an American deputy.
On a trip to Turks and Caicos, a Chicago, Illinois native named Shamone Duncan was tragically killed.
Over the weekend in Turks and Caicos, a grandmother and an American sheriff's deputy were fatally shot while celebrating her sister's birthday.
On Grace Bay Road in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a Cook County, Illinois Deputy Shamone Duncan, 50, and local resident Dario Stubbs were both shot outside a restaurant around 10 p.m. on Saturday, according to a news release from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.
According to Acting Commissioner Rodney Adams, three individuals were injured during the shooting, with one succumbing to injuries at the scene and another dying at an area hospital. The third victim, a 29-year-old male, is currently receiving medical treatment.
Adams stated that there was no proof to indicate that Ms. Duncan, Mr. Stubbs, or the injured individual were the intended victims of this occurrence.
No arrests had been made in the shooting as of Tuesday afternoon.
On the night of her death, the 50-year-old grandmother was celebrating her sister's birthday at a rooftop party at the Aziza Restaurant and Providenciales, where she was on her second of three days on vacation, according to her family.
Aziza Restaurant could not immediately be reached for comment.
Duncan was hit by a stray bullet during a gunfire that erupted after an argument downstairs, according to his family.
"My mom got hit by bystanders who tried to help after she got up during the chaos," Shamon Payton told ABC 7. "People started yelling, 'get down, everybody got down,' and she got up."
At the time of her death, Duncan had been working as a deputy with the Cook County Department of Corrections for 20 years and had recently been reassigned to Cermak Health Services.
The sheriff's office expressed sympathy for the family of Deputy Shamone Duncan.
"The family of Sheriff Shamone A. Duncan, who was born and raised in Chicago, is deeply saddened to announce her tragic passing on Jan. 18, 2025. Above all, Shamone was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend."
"Her 21 years of service as Cook County Sheriff were a shining example of her commitment to justice and dedication to protecting others. She was a beacon of strength, compassion, and leadership, inspiring countless lives in her community and beyond."
Duncan's family said that he is survived by two daughters, his son, and his granddaughter.
