A German national on a legal visa is accused of killing a US Border Agent during a traffic stop in Vermont near the Northern border, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.

A spokesperson with FBI Albany confirmed that the deceased subject is a German national in the U.S. on a current Visa, as per information from our partners at the Department of Homeland Security.

On Monday, January 20th, 44-year-old U.S. Border Patrol Agent David "Chris" Maland was shot during a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Vermont.

The FBI in Albany stated that Maland was a U.S. Air Force veteran, expressing their condolences: "We are deeply saddened for our partners and join them in their mourning as they grieve the loss of their colleague."

Officials confirmed that one of the suspects in the car was dead and the other was injured and is currently being treated at an area hospital.

The FBI office is continuing to collaborate with federal, state, and local authorities to investigate the incident further.

The FBI Albany office has a range of resources available, including the Evidence Response Team (ERT), Victim Services, Digital Forensics, and numerous Special Agents.

The Border Patrol Union expressed its sympathy, stating on X, "Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of our fallen agent in Vermont."

The family received condolences from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), and Rep. Becca Balint (Vt.-AL).

"The elected officials issued a statement on Tuesday, expressing their support for Border Patrol agents and their crucial role in safeguarding our borders. They pledged to work closely with the agency to ensure that they have the necessary staffing, pay, and working conditions to carry out their duties effectively. The officials emphasized the importance of preventing future incidents like the one that occurred today."

Hours after being inaugurated for a second term, President Donald Trump's campaign promise of securing the border and defending law enforcement was fulfilled with a shooting.
