USC cancels valedictorian's speech and stops inviting outside commencement speakers.
In order to maintain the safety of the school and its students, University Provost Andrew Guzman stated that the decision was necessary.
USC has decided to cancel all outside speakers at this year's commencement ceremony, following the cancellation of a Muslim student's valedictorian speech due to social media posts about Israel.
The university has announced that its main-stage commencement program will not have outside speakers and honorees present due to the highly publicized circumstances surrounding the event.
The unsigned statement continued, "We hope to confer honorary degrees to this exceptional group at a future commencement or academic ceremony."
The main stage ceremony will be accompanied by 38 satellite ceremonies, five celebrations, and 65 receptions, as well as other internal and external speakers and performers.
USC has announced that biomedical engineering major Asna Tabassum will not be allowed to give her valedictorian speech during the main stage commencement, which attracts 65,000 people to the University Park Campus.
Andrew Guzman, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, wrote that after careful consideration, our student valedictorian will not deliver a speech at commencement. While this is disappointing, tradition must give way to safety.
In order to maintain the school and its students' safety, Guzman stated that the decision was necessary.
Guzman wrote that the decision was not related to freedom of speech and that there was no entitlement to speak at a commencement. The main concern was maintaining campus security and safety.
The Los Angeles Times reported that USC received threats through letters, phone calls, and emails.
After her speech was canceled, Tabassum appeared on CNN and stated that she was not sorry about promoting the "unequivocal and unconditional right to life for all people, including Palestinians," which she believed was the purpose of her anti-Israel social media posts that led to the cancellation of her speech.
Unfortunately, human rights is a controversial topic, as Tabassum stated. She attributed her views on the matter to the influence of her teachers and peers at the university.
"StopAntisemitism" accused USC of portraying the valedictorian as a victim and denying the Jewish right to self-determination, masking it as false calls of Islamophobia, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Planet Chronicle' Nikolas Lanum and Gabriel Hays contributed to this report.
