UnitedHealthcare CEO murder: Details of the backpack belonging to the assassin emerge
Trace evidence processing will be performed on the backpack.
The gray backpack linked to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which authorities found dumped in Central Park, has reportedly yielded a jacket and some Monopoly money, but no gun.
On Friday, a backpack containing a jacket was discovered in Central Park West. According to Bloomberg, NBC News reported on Saturday that the backpack also contained Monopoly money.
On the fourth day of the search for Thompson's killer, authorities announced that he was shot with a silenced pistol at approximately 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel.
On the day the masked suspect opened fire from behind and fled the scene, police believe that the gunman left New York City on a bus.
The police have not yet confirmed if the discovered backpack matches the one worn by the suspect during the murder, as seen in the surveillance camera footage.
The retired FBI agent, Scott Duffey, informed Planet Chronicle Digital that the item will be sent to a lab in Queens for forensic examination, where it will undergo trace evidence processing.
"Duffey explained on Saturday that the process of hair, fibers, and DNA is involved in this process. When someone holds their hand against the strap and tightens the buckle like most people do, that is likely where DNA can be found. Additionally, zippers are also involved in this process."
The suspect's water bottle, discarded cellphone, and bullet casings with the words "deny," "depose," and "delay" are being analyzed by investigators.
Ted Williams, a former homicide detective from Washington, D.C., stated that the Monopoly money found in a backpack is a "deadly game of deception with the authorities." He added, "It's all part of a cat-and-mouse game."
"This killer is confident that they will find the backpack and is leaving breadcrumbs to inform authorities that they are in control, not the other way around."
Planet Chronicle Digital's Christina Coulter contributed to this report.
