Two years after her daughter's murder, the Idaho victim's mother speaks out.
Madison Mogen's mother made her first public statement about the 2022 quadruple homicide at the University of Idaho on Wednesday.
"Karen Laramie, Mogen's mother, revealed on the "TODAY" show on Wednesday that while her daughter's death two years ago may seem real, she knows where the girls are and faith is the foundation of her ability to rise each morning in the face of such a profound loss."
As she grew older, the woman described the 21-year-old as a genuinely kind person.
"Laramie never remembered having slammed doors in their house until one time when she was eight years old. She refused to eat dinner and instead snacked on string cheese. Laramie recalled that she slammed the cheese on the counter and stormed off to her room. Her husband Scott and Laramie looked at each other in surprise, wondering what had just happened."
"She just had that genuine love that's just impossible to describe." — Karen Laramie
Another time, Mogen called her cousin on Veterans Day to express gratitude for his service.
The Made With Kindness Foundation was established two years after the tragedy at U of I by the families of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, and Xana Kernodle. The foundation's website describes it as a non-profit organization that aims to provide hope and support to students through scholarship funds, grief wellness seminars, and comprehensive on-campus safety awareness.
A 30-year-old former Ph.D. student named Bryan Kohbegerger, who was studying criminology at Washington State University in Pullman, is accused of fatally stabbing four students in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022. Two other roommates survived the massacre.
Despite the unknown motive, Kohberger has pleaded not guilty to the gruesome crime and his trial is scheduled for August of next year after numerous delays due to legal challenges.
Laramia stated that she believes the legal system prioritizes the accused rather than the victims, and she will not elaborate further on her thoughts about the lengthy justice process.
Kohberger faces the death penalty in Idaho if convicted.
