Two Europeans are accused by the FBI of conspiring to carry out a "swatting" plot targeting members of Congress and other elected officials.
An accused individual is said to have made a threat to use explosives prior to President Biden's inauguration in January 2021.
On Wednesday, court records were unsealed, revealing that two European men have been charged by federal prosecutors for "swatting" dozens of members of Congress and other U.S. elected officials, including a former president and president-elect.
According to a federal indictment, Thomasz Szabo, 26, of Romania, and Nemanja Radovanovic, 21, of Serbia, are accused of making "swatting" calls to approximately 100 individuals with the intention of inciting an aggressive police response at their homes.
No U.S. Secret Service agent's affidavit names the former president or any other lawmakers.
One of the alleged victims in the indictment is a "former elected official from the executive branch" who was swatted on Jan. 9, 2024, although the two defendants are not explicitly charged with threatening a former president.
The agent wrote that although some calls targeted private citizens randomly, the majority of the calls targeted public officials, their family members, and other prominent individuals.
The court records in Washington did not reveal whether Szabo or Radovanovic were arrested or if they had legal representation. According to the court filing that accompanied their indictment, investigators believed they were in different foreign countries last week.
In January, Secret Service agents questioned Szabo in Romania. According to the affidavit, Szabo admitted to being involved in both swatting and bomb threats since late 2020.
In February, Radovanovic was questioned by agents in Serbia. According to the affidavit, he stated that he followed a "script" during his swatting calls and acted under the direction of a juvenile who provided him with the victims' addresses.
Szabo and Radovanovic were both indicted on charges of conspiracy and over 25 counts of making threats. The conspiracy plot lasted over three years, from December 2020 to January 2024, according to prosecutors. The indictment was handed down by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C. last Thursday.
Szabo was accused of organizing and moderating chat groups to coordinate swatting attacks against 40 private citizens and 61 officials, including cabinet-level members of the federal government's executive branch, the head of a federal law enforcement agency, a federal judge, current and former governors and other state officials.
In January 2021, three days before President Biden's inauguration, Szabo threatened to detonate explosives at the U.S. Capitol and kill the president-elect, according to the indictment.
"Real people, police resources, and emotional trauma are all harmed by swatting, which is not a harmless prank," stated Matthew Graves, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia.
In late 2023 and early 2024, the FBI reported a rise in swatting calls, with some of the victims linked to court cases against former President Trump. A fake emergency call was made on Christmas Day of 2023, targeting Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith, who is overseeing Trump's election subversion case in Washington. Additionally, a fake emergency call was made on Christmas Day of 2023, targeting U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing Trump's election subversion case in Washington.
