Two DePaul University students, both of Jewish descent, were targeted on campus by masked assailants.
According to the university president, the two students were visibly showing support for Israel when they were reportedly attacked.
On Wednesday afternoon, two Jewish students were attacked by masked assailants on the DePaul University campus in Chicago, as stated in a letter from the school's president.
A public safety alert was issued for faculty, staff, and students on the Lincoln Park campus at around 3:20 p.m., as an incident occurred in front of the Student Center.
Manuel expressed shock that two Jewish students at DePaul were targeted in an attack while openly supporting Israel.
The offenders punched the two students, but the students refused medical treatment for their injuries.
Manuel expressed outrage that the incident happened on campus, stating that it was unacceptable and a violation of DePaul's values to respect and care for the dignity of every individual.
The university is collaborating with Chicago police to classify the attack as a hate crime and providing support and resources to the students.
He stated that they would do everything in their power to make those responsible pay for the outrageous incident.
After the attack, DePaul assured that it will take all necessary measures to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for its diverse student body.
"Our university recognizes that Israel is a core part of our Jewish community's identity, and we will not tolerate any acts of hatred or violence on our campus."
Those with information on attacks, threats, or violence can contact Public Safety at 773-325-7777 (Lincoln Park) or 312-362-8400 (Loop).
"Our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of our university community," concluded Manuel.
Earlier this year, pro-Palestinian demonstrations were very active at many schools across the U.S., including DePaul University.
On May 16, Chicago police officers dispersed an anti-Israel protest on the university's quad, which had been ongoing for over two weeks and resulted in the closure of all green spaces.
