Trump confronts sanctuary cities over deportation as immigration crackdown commences.

President Trump is confronting defiant sanctuary cities as he tries to fulfill his campaign promise to deport illegal immigrants, while city leaders remain resistant to providing any assistance to federal authorities that could result in the removal of migrants.

Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, has vowed to reveal a set of "revolutionary" executive orders that have solidified sanctuary cities as havens for immigrants.

Local ordinances prohibiting federal immigration removal operations have been reaffirmed by cities across the country, including Chicago and San Diego.

In his inaugural address on Monday, President Trump pledged to halt all illegal immigration and return millions of criminal aliens to their countries of origin.

San Diego and Los Angeles, California

In November 2016, after Trump's election victory, Los Angeles officially banned the use of city resources to aid federal deportation efforts, strengthening its status as a sanctuary city.

In 2017, California's history as a sanctuary state for migrants was solidified when former Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation, and San Diego's board of supervisors passed a policy similar to that of federal immigration authorities.

In his first term, Trump abolished hundreds of millions of dollars in law enforcement funding for sanctuary cities. The Biden administration reinstated the grants in 2021, according to Reuters.

San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, a vocal critic of the state's immigration policies, expressed his hope to see "the rule of law restored in America."

""We must prioritize the well-being of Americans and maintain the sanctity of our borders," he stated."

Denver, Colorado

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston gained attention when he declared he would be incarcerated due to his opposition to Trump's mass deportation plan, stating that he believed a "Tiananmen Square moment" would occur if federal immigration officials enforced their duties.

"According to Johnston, who spoke with Denverite in an interview, having DPD stationed at the county line to prevent their entry would not be enough. Instead, he believes that 50,000 Denverites would be needed to keep them out. He likens the situation to the Tiananmen Square protests, where peaceful protesters were met with violence from the government. Similarly, he imagines Highland moms coming out to support the migrants, just as they did for the migrants."

But in a subsequent interview with 9News, he walked back those comments.

""If I could go back, I wouldn't have used that image. That's the image I hope we can avoid. I was trying to convey that this outcome is something I hope we can prevent in this country. None of us want that," Johnston stated."

He stated that he was ready to demonstrate against anything he deemed "unlawful, unethical, or un-American" in the city, including the application of military force, and was subsequently questioned about his willingness to be imprisoned for opposing policies implemented by the government.

"Johnston stated, "I'm not afraid of that and not seeking it. My goal is to negotiate with reasonable people to solve hard problems.""

Under the leadership of former President Biden, Denver has experienced an unprecedented influx of migrants, prompting Mayor Johnston to reduce city services to accommodate their housing and feeding needs.

Chicago, Illinois

On Sunday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson made it clear that he would oppose Trump's plans.

"Johnson wrote on Sunday that Chicago's commitment to protecting and supporting the city remains unwavering, regardless of the circumstances. He pledged to continue fighting for justice and safety for all residents of the city."

Johnson assured the city would continue to comply with the 2017 Illinois Trust Act, which prohibits local law enforcement from participating in federal immigration enforcement, before making his statement.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu reaffirmed Boston's standing as a sanctuary city after Trump's election, emphasizing that she does not want migrants to "hide in the shadows."

Wu stated in an interview on WCVB's On The Record that the last thing we want is for individuals who contribute to our economy, school system, community, and city to feel like they have to hide in the shadows.

Boston, like many sanctuary cities, enacted legislation in 2014, under Mayor Marty Walsh, that prohibits local law enforcement from inquiring about an individual's immigration status or disclosing such information to ICE. In 2019, the Boston Trust Act was amended.

During an interview on WGBH, Wu stated that the Boston Trust Act imposes strict restrictions on local law enforcement from serving as the enforcement arm for any federal immigration law approach.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has concurred with Boston Mayor Marty Walsh's stance, stating that the Massachusetts State Police will not aid in immigration enforcement.

On Tuesday morning, an immigration raid is planned to take place in Chicago, according to four sources familiar with the planning, with between 100 and 200 officers involved in the operation, which will last for a week, as reported by The Wall Street Journal on Friday night.

Trump's appointed immigration enforcement chief, Tom Homan, vowed to carry out extensive raids as part of Trump's tough immigration policy.

"ICE will be freed from handcuffs and allowed to arrest criminal aliens, as stated by Homan on Planet Chronicle' "Jesse Waters Primetime." The message to ICE is clear: enforce immigration law without regret, prioritize public safety first, but no one is exempt. If someone is in the country unlawfully, they have a problem."

"ICE will conduct big raids in many cities across the country, including Chicago, if there are 24 field offices established on Tuesday."

Despite some cities and states opposing Trump's policy plan, others are supporting it.

In Colorado, Douglas County's board of commissioners passed a resolution supporting Trump's mass deportation plan, making the county a "non-sanctuary county."

"Douglas County Chairperson Abe Laydon informed Planet Chronicle Digital that the county will adhere to federal immigration law and continue to support the U.S. Constitution."

"The board of county commissioners, including the sheriff's office, will work with federal immigration officials to keep the community safe and empower local law enforcement."

In Texas, Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham presented the administration with over 1,400 acres for the purpose of conducting a mass deportation operation.

Her office is ready to collaborate with the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or the United States Border Patrol to construct a facility for processing, detaining, and coordinating the largest deportation of violent criminals in the country's history, as stated in a letter obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital.
