Trump assassination suspect escaped through bushes and was captured in a photo of their getaway car.
Authorities claim that a witness captured a photo of Ryan Welsey Routh fleeing from the bushes near Trump International Golf Course.
On Sunday, a witness captured a photo of the suspect involved in the second attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump as he escaped from the bushes.
On Sunday, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw announced at a joint press conference with the FBI that a shots-fired call was received from the Secret Service at approximately 1:30 p.m., prompting units nearby to seal off the area around Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
"Luckily, we obtained a witness statement that described the suspect's vehicle and tag number. Our real-time crime center used license plate readers to locate the vehicle on I-95, and the Martin County Sheriff's Office was notified and pulled it over, resulting in the suspect's detention."
The witness was taken to see the detained individual by law enforcement, and he identified the person as the one who ran out of the bushes and jumped into the car, according to Bradshaw.
Ryan Welsey Routh, the suspect, will appear in federal court Monday morning.
The sheriff stated that in the bushes, law enforcement found an AK-47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks hung on a fence with ceramic tile, and a GoPro camera.
"Bradshaw stated that the Secret Service agent who was on the course did an excellent job. He explained that the agency has an agent who jumps one hole ahead of time to where the president was at, and he was able to spot the rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engage the individual. As a result, the individual took off. That's what we know about the investigation."
Bradshaw praised the Secret Service's reaction but admitted that the perimeter of protection around Trump was restricted.
""The golf course is surrounded by shrubbery, so when someone gets into the shrubbery, they're out of sight. However, at this level, the president is not the sitting president. If he were, the entire golf course would be surrounded. Since he's not, security is limited to the areas deemed possible by the Secret Service," Bradshaw said."
A Secret Service representative confirmed that Trump was "safe and unharmed" after a protective incident at Trump International Golf Club at West Palm Beach around 2 p.m. on Sunday. The representative at the press conference stated that Secret Service personnel opened fire on a gunman near the property line and that the matter is currently under investigation.
The FBI Miami Field Office's special agent in charge, Jeffrey Veltri, announced at a press conference that the FBI is leading the federal investigation and has deployed various resources, including investigative teams, crisis response team members, bomb technicians, and evidence response team members.
The bureau pledged to continue supporting the investigation with the full resources of the FBI, along with the United States Secret Service, Palm Beach Sheriff's Office, Martin County Sheriff's Office, and state and local law enforcement, urging the public to avoid the area.
