Trump assassination attempt task force chair raises concerns about 'frozen' response to shooter after site visit.
On Monday, lawmakers visited the site of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania Rep. Mike Kelly, the chairman of the House task force on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, questioned on Monday the "frozen" response of law enforcement when they first spotted gunman Thomas Crooks.
After his second visit to the site of the assassination attempt at the Butler Farm Show fairgrounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Crooks shot at Trump during the former president's campaign rally on July 13, killing one attendee and severely wounding two others, Kelly made his comments.
Who was the quarterback in charge of making the decision? And when the sniper had the shooter in his sights, what we've heard so far is that he was waiting for authorization to take the shot. Someone needs to make that call. If they're not making that call, the team can't move. That's what I see here. It was frozen for a while, as Kelly told Planet Chronicle Digital.
Kelly, originally from the Butler area, stated that it is too early to determine if criminal negligence was involved in the assassination attempt.
The worst thing in life is not being prepared, according to the Pennsylvania lawmaker.
The bipartisan task force investigating the shooting, which was passed with a 416-0 vote in a House resolution, is still conducting interviews with federal, local, and state officials, as well as rally attendees, to better understand what happened on July 13. Several members of the task force visited Butler on Monday and noted that they have the authority to subpoena federal agencies for information.
On Monday, Jason Crow, a decorated former Army Ranger who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, stated that the task force aims to restore confidence in Americans that their leaders are safeguarded.
"At this point, a lot more questions than answers." — Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo.
"I definitely noted today that there were many unsecured lines of sight," he said. "At this point, there are more questions than answers."
On Monday, lawmakers present at the assassination attempt site were able to see the exact location where Trump had been speaking on stage, close to the AGR building where Crooks fired at least eight shots. The FBI previously stated that Trump had climbed HVAC equipment and piping on the side of the one-story, industrial building to reach his shooting position.
For at least 70 minutes in the morning, the gunman was present on the rally grounds, and he flew a drone over the area for approximately 10 minutes in the afternoon.
Iron Clad USA's video footage reveals that Crooks was present at the rally for at least an hour and a half before the shooting began.
WATCH:
Text messages from Republican Senator Chuck Grassley reveal that snipers identified the shooter Crooks 90 minutes before he opened fire on the former president, resulting in the death of 50-year-old Corey Comperatore and injuring 74-year-old James Copenhaver and 57-year-old David Dutch.
When one police officer boosted another one up to look at the roof of the AGR building, the boosted officer spotted Crooks. However, the 20-year-old gunman pointed his AR-15-style rifle at the officer, causing him to lose his balance and fall to the ground.
WATCH:
Reports of a suspicious person on the roof were called in by two officers, but the gunman fired shortly after.
The AGR building's roof was covered by the U.S. Secret Service, as instructed by law enforcement officials in body-worn camera footage from the Butler Township Police Department.
WATCH:
Since early August, the task force has been probing the assassination attempt, as stated by Kelly.
The FBI is investigating Crooks' motive for the assassination attempt and whether he had any accomplices, despite the agency stating that there is no evidence of others being involved.
