Tram crash on Ocean City, Maryland boardwalk results in toddler's death
Previous non-fatal incidents reportedly involved Ocean City tram.
On Tuesday, a 2-year-old boy was fatally struck by a tram while crossing the boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland, according to authorities.
Near Dorchester Street, at approximately 8:14 p.m., a southbound tram struck a boy who was crossing near the boardwalk tram pad, according to the Ocean City Police Department.
EMS personnel pronounced the child dead at the scene.
After the fatal collision, both tram conductors stayed at the scene and a section of the boardwalk was temporarily shut down.
The identity of the boy was not immediately released.
The Ocean City Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the incident.
In 2019, the Daily Times obtained records of other incidents involving the Ocean City tram.
Between 2015 and 2019, ten incidents were reported where people sustained minor injuries due to being bumped or struck by a tram, according to the outlet. In 2019, a couple filed a lawsuit against the town of Ocean City after a 2017 incident with the tram resulted in the wife sustaining serious injuries.
