Tragic workplace accident results in death of Georgia lineman and injury of another.
The City of Griffin named Eric Weems as the deceased lineman and Trent Granger as the injured one.
A veteran lineman from a Georgia town was tragically killed in a workplace accident.
On Wednesday, Eric Weems passed away after an accident on Spalding Street in Griffin, Georgia, where he and Trent Granger were working with faulty equipment, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The City of Griffin stated that Granger is in a critical yet stable condition.
The city announced on Facebook that their beloved lineman, Eric Weems, tragically passed away this morning after sustaining a catastrophic injury while working on a project on Spalding Street.
In October 2020, a video was posted by the city, celebrating Weems' 19th year as a lineman. Weems, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, was featured in the video, explaining what it's like to be a lineman during 2020 Georgia Cities Week.
In 2017, he was highlighted by the city during Lineman Appreciation Month with a brief video detailing his passion for his job.
One of Weems' favorite aspects of being a lineman is restoring power to families with children during winter, when their homes are chilly.
"Weems stated that "the feeling of accomplishment from turning on people's lights is immense," which is a significant factor in his actions."
On Oct. 3, the city announced that Weems was a member of a mutual aid crew that traveled to Quitman, Georgia, to assist in restoring power to those affected by Hurricane Helene.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp expressed his sympathy to the city and the families of Weems and Granger following the tragic incident.
"Thanks to the tireless efforts of our linemen, our communities are able to recover from devastating storms and get back on track," Kemp wrote.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic news and request that all Georgians keep the Griffin linemen, their families, and their loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during these challenging times."
The city wrote, "We request that our community permit the family, friends, and colleagues to mourn the loss and pray for healing for two of our own. We will continue to provide updates on Trent as we receive them. Collectively, we grieve."
Griffin is situated south of Atlanta and is included in the city's metropolitan region.
