TikTok 'Scarface' actor, convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, sarcastically applauds as he is sentenced to life in prison.
In San Diego, Ana Abulaban's estranged husband, Ali Abulaban, was given a sentence for taking the lives of both Ana and her lover.
A judge ruled Friday that a former San Diego TikTok star will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his estranged wife and her lover in October 2021, during a heated proceeding.
Ali Abulaban, 32, who used the alias "JinnKid" on social media, was given two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders of his wife, Ana Abulaban, 28, and Rayburn Cardenas Barron, 29, at the Spire San Diego luxury apartment complex in the East Village, which he confessed to during trial.
In May, Ali was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder after testifying during his trial that he couldn't stop shooting Ana and Barron when he found them in bed together.
At the time of the murders, the convicted killer, who went by JinnKid on TikTok, had approximately 940,000 followers. His account featured comedy skits and impersonations of the character Tony Montana from the 1983 film "Scarface," Deputy District Attorney Taren Brast said after Ali's arraignment in October 2021.
"During the hearing, San Diego Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Fraser stated that Ali is a very talented actor. When he saw the ‘Scarface’ videos, it was as if he had become that persona of Scarface when he committed those crimes. The judge described Ali's actions as cold-blooded killing without remorse."
The video of Ali's sentencing shows him mockingly clapping in response as the crowd cheered.
"In court, Fraser stated, "I am uncertain if he truly regrets his actions," implying that he believed the defendant was not genuinely sorry for taking the lives of two innocent people."
Ali Abulaban apologized for his behavior, attributing it to mental illness and drug abuse, while defending his actions as a "crime of passion."
He expressed concern to the court that he spent more time on the stand than the jury took to deliberate his fate, as reported by NBC San Diego.
"He will die in prison," Fraser assured the courtroom.
Ana was accused of asking Ali to leave their shared high-rise apartment before he checked into a hotel, only for him to sneak back later and cause damage to the apartment. Additionally, he was alleged to have installed a recording device on his daughter's iPad and left it in Ana's bedroom.
After discovering his wife having an affair with another man through a recording device, he returned to the apartment and allegedly shot Barron three times and Ana once in the head.
"During the trial, Ali testified that before he could stop himself, he snapped and grabbed his gun. He then started shooting without control, unable to stop. He described the experience as if he was watching it happen from the passenger seat of his own body."
At the sentencing, Ana Abulaban's sister yelled at Ali regarding the family's suffering due to the loss.
""My sister's life was miserable living with you because you treated her like she didn't matter, but she did," she said, NBC San Diego reported."
