Earlier this year, three U.S. military service members were killed and dozens more were injured in a fatal drone strike, for which two Iranian men have been charged.

In Massachusetts, Mahdi Mohammad Sadeghi was apprehended and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Meanwhile, Mohammad Abedininajafabadi, the other suspect, was detained in Italy by Italian authorities, according to federal prosecutors.

The charges are linked to the deadly January 28 strike against US forces, the first since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023.

On January 28, three Army reservists from Georgia, Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders, and Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, were killed in a drone attack on a small military base near the Syrian and Iraqi border, known as Tower 22. Additionally, 47 others were injured in the attack.

The 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, 926th Engineer Brigade, located in Fort Moore, Georgia, was assigned to all three individuals.

The soldiers were positioned in Jordan to aid in the fight against the Islamic State terror group as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, a U.S. military initiative.

As an interior electrician, Rivers, 46, served in the Army Reserve, while Sanders, 24, and Moffett, 23, worked as horizontal construction engineers.

The U.S. retaliated against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups by launching strikes on more than 85 targets in Iraq and Syria.

At the time, CENTCOM stated that the targets of the attack included command and control operations, intelligence centers, militia group's rockets, missiles, unmanned vehicle storages, and supply chain facilities.

The escalation of violence against U.S. forces in the Middle East was marked by the deaths of soldiers. At the time, the Biden administration attributed the attacks to U.S. support for Israel's ongoing war against Hamas.
