The victims of the Trump assassination attempt were "privileged" to attend the 47th president's inauguration.
James Copenhaver and David Dutch's attorney stated that they are "not on the road to recovery and will never fully recover."
The two victims who were injured in the July assassination attempt against President-elect Trump will be present at the 47th president's inauguration on Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C.
On July 13, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Thomas Crooks, 20, shot and critically injured David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, while they were listening to then-presidential candidate Trump speak at a podium.
"James and David are grateful to President Trump and his team for inviting them to the Inauguration weekend, according to Dutch and Copenhaver, who released a statement through their attorney, Joseph Feldman. They are thrilled to be part of the celebrations with the incoming administration and other guests. President Trump has made both of their clients feel like family."
Feldman stated that Trump and his team have been exceptional in keeping an open line of communication with the families and have shown great concern for James and David's long journey to recovery.
Copenhaver and Dutch met with and shook hands with the president-elect after he won the 2024 election, but their bond will be forever tainted by the tragic events that occurred on July 13, 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief and devoted husband and father of two, tragically lost his life after being shot while defending his family from gunfire.
Feldman stated that while President Trump and their clients will share the privilege of being present at the Inauguration, there is one person who will not be attending, and their clients wish to express their sympathies to the Comperatore family once more.
"As always, their support for President Trump is unwavering, and they both look forward to America being placed first for the next four years." — Joseph Feldman
During the assassination attempt, both Dutch and Copenhaver were shot twice, leaving Trump with a nicked ear. The president-elect has attributed his survival to his campaign staff, stating that they changed a slide on his presentation at the rally in time for him to turn his head just when Crooks' bullet struck him.
The two injured individuals have been in the hospital for weeks and their injuries have affected their daily routines. Now, they plan to hold those responsible accountable.
"Despite not being fully recovered, they will attend the Inauguration as a tribute to their strength and love of country, Feldman said. The President and his team have ensured that their needs will be met during the weekend. On behalf of James and David, we express our gratitude for everyone's continued prayers and support."
The nearby one-story American Glass Research (AGR) building was not within the official perimeter of the rally, yet both victims are still questioning how Crooks managed to get onto the roof and shoot at Trump from 150 yards away.
The gunman climbed HVAC equipment and piping to reach the roof of the AGR building and concealed himself until he started shooting at approximately 6:11 p.m., according to officials.
"Feldman previously told Planet Chronicle Digital that the United States is the country where we invest a lot of money in security resources, especially through the federal government. At political rallies, the security is provided by the federal government, but it fails."
On the day of the assassination attempt, a crook parked his vehicle and flew a drone about 200 yards from where the former president would be speaking between 3:50 p.m. and 4 p.m. FBI Director Christopher Wray testified during a July 17 congressional hearing that the crook had been at the rally site for about 70 minutes on the morning of the assassination attempt.
WATCH COPENHAVER'S POV:
The House Task Force investigating the assassination attempts on Trump's life released its final report in December, detailing the "preexisting conditions and leadership failures" that led to the deadly campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
The report stated that the combination of planning, execution, and leadership failures before July 13, 2024, as well as the preexisting conditions that weakened the effectiveness of the human and material resources on that day, created a dangerous environment for the former President and everyone at the campaign event.
The Secret Service's independence from the Department of Homeland Security and access to protection for dignitaries should be reevaluated, as the number of dignitaries receiving protection has increased annually, putting a strain on the agency's funds.
