Americans in Syria should leave immediately or prepare to remain indoors for an extended period, as advised by the U.S. Embassy.

The embassy issued a warning on Monday stating that the security situation in Syria remains volatile and unpredictable due to ongoing armed conflict and terrorism in the country following the downfall of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

If possible, U.S. citizens should leave Syria. Those who cannot should plan for emergencies and be ready to stay put for an extended period.

The embassy stopped providing normal consular services in 2012, according to its website. The State Department advises Americans to avoid traveling to Syria due to the risk of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping or hostage taking, and armed conflict.

"The U.S. government is unable to offer any regular or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Syria, according to the embassy. U.S. citizens in Syria who require emergency assistance to leave should contact the U.S. Embassy in the country they plan to enter."

The embassy advises Americans in Syria to keep their cell phones charged and closely monitor news updates for potential security risks, which should be factored into their travel plans and activities.

Earlier this month, rebels stormed Syria's capital of Damascus, causing Assad to flee to Russia.

On Monday, he issued a statement stating that he had never sought personal gain but viewed himself as a guardian of a national project, backed by the faith of the Syrian people, who believed in its vision.

Assad stated that he has remained steadfast in his belief in their determination to safeguard the state, safeguard its institutions, and maintain their decisions until the very end.
