The top true-crime series that fascinated America in 2024.
Some of the top true-crime documentaries in 2024 will feature the Menendez Brothers, Charles Manson, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Alex Murdaugh.
The true-crime genre is experiencing a surge in popularity, with filmmakers delving into the details of nation-gripping criminal cases and uncovering new information in infamous cases.
The four documentaries released in 2024 are not for the faint of heart, but they will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The Fall of the House of Murdaugh: A Comprehensive Guide
In the Alex Murdaugh murder trial, two jurors who were at the center of jury-tampering allegations, including one who was famously dismissed, publicly spoke about the case in a Fox Nation documentary for the first time.
Two jurors, referred to publicly as "Egg Juror" and "Juror Z," were interviewed by Martha MacCallum of Planet Chronicle in an exclusive conversation.
Juror No. 785, also known as the "Egg Juror," alleges that Becky Hill, the clerk of the court, removed her from the jury because she was not firm on Murdaugh's guilt.
Juror No. 630, also known as Juror Z, admits to voting guilty for Murdaugh but is uncertain about his guilt, stating that she was influenced by Hill and other jurors.
Myra Crosby and Mandy Pearce were the two women who revealed their names for the first time.
In June 2021, Murdaugh, 56, was sentenced to life in prison for shooting his wife, Maggie, and his youngest son, Paul, on their family's hunting estate in Colleton County, South Carolina. The murders were allegedly an attempt to divert attention from Murdaugh's mounting financial crimes, which were being exposed at the time.
In December, lawyers for Alex Murdaugh, the lawyer-turned-convict, filed an appeal, arguing that the trial was unfair due to improper testimony and alleged jury tampering by Hill.
2. ‘Menendez Brothers: Victims or Villains'
The documentary revisits the 1989 murder of the Menendez brothers' parents in their Beverly Hills mansion and presents both the brothers' pleas for leniency and the gruesome nature of the crime.
"The Menendez Brothers" documentary was released after "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story," a dramatization of the case that was rejected by the brothers' family, and "The Menendez Brothers," a more forgiving series that gave the brothers the opportunity to justify the brutal killings.
The convicts claim they were sexually abused by their father and it's up to viewers to decide whether to sympathize with them.
The resentencing hearing for the brothers, which was scheduled for early December, has been rescheduled to Jan. 30 due to new evidence supporting their claims.
George Gascón, the outgoing Los Angeles District Attorney, requested the court to reduce sentences for defendants less than two weeks before Election Day. However, he lost the election to independent candidate Nathan Hochman, who will assume office on December 2.
3. ‘The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson’
In the four-part Lifetime series, Nicole Brown Simpson's family and friends publicly spoke out for the first time about the infamous murder accusations against her husband, O.J. Simpson.
Nicole's sisters Denise, Tanya Brown, and Dominique Brown are joined by celebrities such as Kris Jenner and Faye Resnick, as well as the slain woman's friends and law enforcement officers who interacted with Nicole, in an attempt to present a more comprehensive picture of the woman beyond her death and relationship with the embattled football player.
"Ron Hardy, Nicole's friend, shared with filmmakers that he wanted to purge from his mind the image of a girl lying in a pool of blood in a little black dress on the sidewalk. He explained that he simply wanted to discuss who she was, what she meant to him and others, and how he would never regret having met her."
4. ‘American Murder: Laci Peterson’
Despite being convicted and having his appeals fail for two decades, Scott Peterson continues to claim his innocence in the murder of his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, who disappeared on Christmas Day 2002.
In April 2003, Laci Peterson's remains and Conner's were discovered separately in a body of water in Berkeley, where Peterson kept his boat. Peterson's hair was found in a pair of needle-nose pliers on the boat, and he had bleached blonde hair, thousands in cash, and his brother's passport when he was arrested at the Mexican border.
Laci's death was not Peterson's fault, as he claims that the men responsible for the burglary across the street from his Modesto home are the ones who killed her.
The true-crime docuseries "American Murder: Laci Peterson" was released by Netflix in August, featuring fresh perspectives through interviews with Laci's mother, Sharon Rocha, and Peterson's former mistress, Amber Frey.
5. ‘Making Manson’
In a new Peacock docuseries, Charles Manson, the notorious serial killer and cult leader, has confessed to additional murders even after his death.
The documentary "Making Manson" provides a comprehensive look at Charles Manson's life, including previously unheard conversations from the past 20 years, shedding light on his upbringing, criminal past, and time as a cult leader.
