A Florida woman has been sentenced to life in prison for suffocating her boyfriend while he was trapped inside a suitcase.
On Monday, Judge Michael Kraynick sentenced Sarah Boone, 46, to life in prison and rejected her lawyers' request for a retrial, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando.
In October, Boone was convicted of second-degree murder. The suitcase incident with her ex-boyfriend Jorge Torres occurred in February 2020.
On Feb. 25, 2020, in their apartment in Winter Park, Florida, Boone and Torres were engaged in a drunken game of hide-and-seek when she unexpectedly zipped him up in a suitcase.
Prosecutors claim that Boone struck Torres with a baseball bat and left him in a suitcase overnight, resulting in his death from asphyxiation.
Disturbing cellphone footage of Torres taken by Boone went viral and made national headlines.
A video that is unsettling depicts a closed suitcase with Torres inside. Torres, while struggling to breathe, told Boone, "Sarah, I can't breathe, baby."
"That's on you," she said in the footage.
"Sarah, I can't breathe," Torres repeated desperately.
In the video, Boone stated, "That's what you get," and "That's what I feel like when you cheat on me," as Torres struggled to break free.
The next day, Boone reported Torres' death in a chilling call that was released in October.
"Boone stated that they were playing a hide-and-seek game last night and he put someone in a suitcase while they were playing."
Boone stated that she passed out the previous night and tried to perform CPR on Torres after discovering he had died.
"She explained that she didn't know what happened, as he had blood coming from his mouth and was purple."
In court, Boone stated that she did not intend to harm Torres and that her actions were in self-defense. Additionally, she accused Torres of abusing her.
On Monday, Torres' family attended Boone's sentencing. Torres' daughter, taking the stand, described her father as a "hidden gem" who was unfairly taken away "by evilness."
She hoped that Boone would see his face when he encountered him at night, as she had said.
