Over the weekend, a second assassination attempt on former President Trump occurred in just two months, with the U.S. Secret Service opening fire on an armed man near a fence while the billionaire candidate was golfing in Florida.

The suspect allegedly aimed an SKS rifle through a fence at the edge of the course, which was recovered by police.

The suspect, who has a history of violent felony convictions and is believed to be a radical activist, has been under investigation by the FBI for his ideological online posts related to geopolitical conflict.

Prior to his arrest on Sunday, suspect Ryan Wesley Routh had numerous encounters with the law and was vocal about his political views, particularly regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to information from federal and local law enforcement, here's a timeline of the final hours of his plot.

Sunday, Sept. 15

At 1:59 a.m., Ryan Wesley Routh was found in the vicinity, according to court documents. Prosecutors claim that phone pings showed him in the tree line at the golf course for over 12 hours before Secret Service agents spotted him and opened fire in the early afternoon.

At 1:30 p.m. ET, Palm Beach County dispatchers received reports of gunfire at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach while the former president was playing a round.

A man with an SKS rifle aimed through a fence and was shot by a Secret Service agent who was sweeping the area ahead of the former president. The suspect fled in a Nissan SUV, leaving behind two bags, a camera, and the rifle.

According to court documents, the suspect's vehicle was stopped by deputies from both the Palm Beach and Martin County sheriff's offices at 2:14 p.m. on Interstate 95.

Routh was the only person in the car when asked why he was being pulled over, he allegedly confirmed it. Deputies observed that the license plate on Routh's Nissan matched a stolen Ford truck.

"According to Steven Cheung, the campaign's communications director, President Trump is safe after gunshots were fired in his vicinity. No additional information is available at this time."

Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man, has been identified as the suspect in custody by federal law enforcement sources.

Over the years, Routh has had numerous encounters with law enforcement, including a 2002 incident in North Carolina where he evaded police during a traffic stop and barricaded himself in his roofing business office for three hours, as reported by the Greensboro News and Record.

He was later convicted of possessing a weapon capable of causing mass destruction, which made him unlawfully own guns. The weapon was a homemade bomb with a 10-inch detonation cord and blasting cap, according to authorities.

At 11 a.m., Routh entered federal court for the first time, dressed in a jail jumpsuit and shackles. Despite his court-appointed attorney, he laughed a few times before the 10-minute hearing began. Throughout the hearing, Routh remained attentive and answered all the judge's questions.

The FBI disclosed on Monday afternoon that its agents had obtained warrants for Routh's devices found at the crime scene and at previous addresses.

At least seven witnesses were interviewed at the scene, and Routh invoked his Fifth Amendment rights and requested a lawyer, according to FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey Veltri.

In 2019, a tipster claimed that Routh was a felon in possession of a firearm in Hawaii. However, the complainant's information was not verified, and Routh was not interviewed by the FBI. Instead, the FBI forwarded the details to Honolulu authorities.

The suspect's online statements and a self-published book prior to Sunday's failed assassination attempt portrayed him as a radical who criticized the former president and other targets, including Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

In 2022, he visited Ukraine and discussed aiding in the country's defense. He wore shirts and carried signs with political messages.

A Reuters photographer captured a photo of a person attending a rally in Mariupol, Ukraine, on May 3, 2022, holding a sign that read "World Help Us."

On May 17, 2022, he participated in a rally in Kyiv urging China to aid Ukrainian troops in Mariupol. He was captured in a photograph at another Kyiv rally on May 29, sitting beside a sea of blue and yellow flags.

He admitted to spending approximately five months in Ukraine attempting to enlist foreign soldiers, including U.S.-trained Afghan nationals, in a 2023 interview with Semafor. Ukrainian officials cautioned that he was "a bit too enthusiastic."

According to the Associated Press, Routh's self-published book on Ukraine's war included a passage directed at Iran, in which he wrote, "You are free to assassinate Trump."

Routh frequently posted about U.S. politics, explaining that he had once been a Trump voter but had since changed his mind.

During the 2020 presidential primaries, he wrote, "I was not supporting Bernie, but now I am; as sleepy Joe stands for nothing; no plans, no ideas, just as limp as Hillary. Bernie...give them hell...fight to the death."

Veltri said his posts were under investigation.

Planet Chronicle Digital scrutinized many of his messages before his account was suspended on Monday. He publicly solicited support for Ukraine and other causes through large accounts, sometimes using violent language.

In 2020, during political unrest in Belarus, which is allied with Russia, he questioned citizens, "Do you not possess firearms?"

"He wrote that he would never allow anyone to put any of his friends in a van, stating that there would be bloodshed and a lot of it."

Although Amazon's policies do not permit the sale of firearms, he suggested purchasing "sniper rifles" on the site.

In June 2020, he tagged Trump, Biden, and Sanders and requested a federal agency with oversight powers over state and local police departments following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

He could also post inflammatory content. He urged Ukrainian forces to continue fighting "until Putin is killed and Moscow is destroyed." He requested that Elon Musk sell him a rocket to accomplish this goal.

In 2106, you were my preferred candidate, but we all hoped that President Trump would be different and better than you. However, our hopes were dashed as he turned out to be just as disappointing as you. It seems like you are getting worse and devolving, and I can't help but wonder if you are mentally challenged. I will be relieved when you are gone.

He enlisted journalists, celebrities, and politicians to amplify his calls for action.

Routh is due back in court this month in the Trump case.
