On Thursday, the New York City Council passed legislation to improve the safety of EMS workers through the provision of body armor and self-defense training.

The FDNY would receive additional safety measures under legislation sponsored by Minority Leader Joseph Borelli, aimed at protecting workers from dangers such as assaults while on the job.

"Borelli stated that these brave individuals risk their lives daily to save New Yorkers, and it is our duty to ensure their safety so they can return home to their families."

The FDNY must ensure that EMS workers are equipped with body armor that meets ballistic and stab-resistant standards as per Introduction 126-A.

The fire department would need to provide "de-escalation and self-defense training" to its workers as per Introduction 127-A. The training would be offered once every third calendar year, as stated on the council's website.

""After pushing bills for several years, I am thrilled that they were finally passed. EMTs deserve the best equipment and training possible, as they are not second-rate first responders," Borelli wrote on X, formerly Twitter."
