The funeral for the slain police officer was not attended by the Democrat mayor.
A large crowd attended the funeral of slain Chicago cop Enrique Martinez.
The funeral for Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez, who was killed in the line of duty two weeks ago, took place on Monday. Despite the request of the officer's family members, the city's mayor did not attend the service.
On Nov. 4, a 26-year-old officer was killed, and Darion C. McMillian, 23, was charged with several felonies, including one count of first-degree murder.
"Adrian Martinez, Martinez's brother and also a police officer, stated at the funeral that becoming Chicago police officers was not just a job for them, but it was their calling."
A large crowd of people, including law enforcement, community members, and government officials, attended the funeral.
On Saturday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson changed his mind about attending the service, as reported by Fox 32.
The mayor's statement read: "I am honoring the family's request and will no longer plan to attend the honors funeral services for Officer Enrique Martinez."
"The loved ones of Officer Martinez, the Chicago Police Department, and the city of Chicago have been going through a difficult two weeks. It is important that we give them the space to grieve and honor the memory of Officer Martinez. We must keep the focus on his loved ones, the CPD, and the city as we continue to remember his ultimate sacrifice and legacy of service."
The mayor's latest statement regarding his attendance was made after his previous comments on Friday.
Mayor Johnson will participate in the funeral services and celebration of life for Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez. Along with Superintendent Snelling and the Chicago Police Department, Mayor Johnson will pay tribute to the legacy of service that Officer Martinez will always be remembered for. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the Martinez family and Officer Martinez’s fiancé.

"The Mayor of Chicago will attend all honors funeral services for every Police Officer, Firefighter or EMT who loses their life in the line of duty. These official honor services are solemn moments to honor the sacrifice of our officers and first responders. It is the Mayor's privilege to support the officers of the entire Chicago Police Department, especially in moments of grief."
On Friday evening, Martinez's family held a press conference and announced that neither Johnson nor Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker would be invited to the funeral, according to Fox 32.
The governor's office stated that it consistently respects the family's wishes and would not participate, as reported by the outlet.
Fatal Chicago shooting
In the East Chatham neighborhood, a fatal shooting occurred when Martinez and his partner arrived at the scene of a report about a vehicle with three people inside blocking traffic.
Police said that before additional officers arrived, Martinez and his partner conversed with the driver and noticed McMillian grabbing a bag from the vehicle's floor.
Allegedly, McMillian fired a handgun and fatally wounded Martinez.
Our police officers, including Officer Martinez, are running towards danger to safeguard the city's residents," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling stated in a previous press conference. "We must all be outraged by the violent offenders who perpetuate cycles of trauma in our communities.
According to his obituary, Martinez was survived by his mother, Rosa; father, Adrian; sister, Angelica; brother, Adrian; and fiancée, Lesly.
"On the night of his murder, my brother was taken from us, our world stopped. On his final tour, my brother looked evil and terror in the face and took his final breath," Adrian Martinez said at the funeral. "That night, my brother saved countless lives, as he was pierced by multiple bullets. Every bullet that struck my brother could have taken the life of someone's mother, father, sister, brother, or friend."
"My brother's strength and courage have allowed us to continue living, cherish loved ones, and face life without fear. Enrique will forever be my little brother, and your memory will endure."
