The FBI revealed that the Bourbon Street terrorist had previously researched the Christmas market attack in Germany and the Mardi Gras festivities before carrying out his deadly rampage.
In 2024, Shamsud-Din Jabbar became a more devout Muslim and began following extremist views, leading to the New Orleans attack.
The FBI has disclosed a fresh photo of the New Orleans terrorist attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, and unveiled new information about his online search history as the probe into the New Year's attack progresses.
The FBI revealed that the Bourbon Street terrorist's internet search history indicated he was researching Bourbon Street balcony access, Mardi Gras information, and shootings that occurred in the city up until mid-November.
Jabbar researched the Christmas market ramming attack in Germany prior to the Bourbon Street attack, as investigators discovered.
On November 10th, officials stated that Jabbar traveled from Houston, Texas to New Orleans via train and then returned to Texas that evening on a bus.
Jabbar looked at an apartment for rent on Orleans Street while in the city. Days later, he applied to rent the apartment but later informed the landlord he had changed his mind.
He recorded his surroundings while riding a bike through the French Quarter months before the attack, using Meta smart glasses.
Jabbar made two trips in June and July 2023, traveling to Cairo, Egypt, and then Ontario, Canada.
According to officials, evidence from the ongoing investigation suggests that Jabbar's religious beliefs intensified in 2022, leading him to adopt extremist views in the spring of 2024.
"In a previous interview with "60 Minutes," FBI Director Christopher Wray stated that it is evident that the individual in question was radicalized online and had a goal of killing as many innocent people as possible in the name of ISIS."
The FBI updated the number of injured in the attack to 57, which is higher than their previous reported number of 35.
Two businesses were among the 136 victims identified, officials said.
On January 1st, at 3:15 a.m., Jabbar drove a rented Ford F-150 truck into a crowd celebrating New Year's on Bourbon Street, killing 14 civilians. He then began shooting at police, who returned fire, killing the attacker.
FBI officials stated that they are working with partners to determine the motive behind Shamsud-Din Jabbar driving his truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street. The overwhelming public response has helped the FBI get closer to providing answers to the families of the victims of the New Year's Day attack.
The FBI is urging anyone with information or video of the Bourbon Street attack to contact www.fbi.gov/bourbonstreetattack or call 1-800-CALL-FBI as the investigation continues.
