The death of a Massachusetts man on a vacation in South Carolina's Hilton Head Island has left his family in shock and grief.
For 10 days, Stanley Kotowski's body was found beneath a house in Hilton Head.
A Massachusetts man's family, who discovered him dead under a house in Hilton Head, South Carolina, after he went missing during a family vacation, is now speaking out.
Stanley Kotowski, 60, was reportedly afflicted with insomnia and anxiety on the morning of Aug. 16 while staying at his family's Hilton Head vacation rental. He disappeared for 10 days before the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office found what they suspect to be his remains on Monday.
"Jackie Kotowski, wife of Stan, wrote on Facebook on Monday with deep sorrow, sharing the devastating news that Stan has passed away. Their hearts are heavy with grief as they begin to process this unimaginable loss."
She expressed gratitude to all those who provided assistance, imparted information, and aided in the search process.
"We are deeply grateful for your compassion and support during this challenging period," Jackie wrote. "As we process this news, we kindly request your continued thoughts and prayers. We have not yet finalized our plans, but we will keep you updated as soon as possible."
In the Sea Pines area of Hilton Head, a popular yet quiet vacation spot on the South Carolina coast, authorities discovered Kotowski's body "under a residence."
"On August 26, 2024, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a call about suspicious activity at a home in Sea Pines. During the investigation, the body of a deceased male was discovered beneath a residence. The deceased male is believed to be 60-year-old Stanley Kotowski of Massachusetts, who was reported missing on August 16, 2024."
The sheriff's office stated that his body was discovered beneath the house at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
Over the weekend, footage of Kotowski leaving his family's rental residence in Hilton Head, South Carolina was released, which was the same day he disappeared.
The video released by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office shows Kotowski exiting the South Sea Pines Drive rental barefoot and looking bewildered as he stops in the middle of the street and looks around before continuing on.
Jackie said to WJCL that "he simply exited the building."
For a month, he suffered from severe insomnia. Despite not having dementia, his anxiety worsened and he became increasingly paranoid.
According to a BCSO report obtained by WJCL, Jackie claimed that her husband believes Sea Pines is a "set up" and has a conspiracy that the people there are out to get him. She also stated that Stanley has made several statements about people watching him at this location.
According to the report, Stanley allegedly said to Jackie before leaving their rental, "I want you to promise that you'll continue without me."
The county coroner will conduct an autopsy on Tuesday.
