The Cybertruck that exploded at the Trump hotel in Las Vegas contained fuel containers and large firework mortars, according to police.
Nearly 20 seconds after arriving at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday morning, the Tesla Cybertruck erupted into flames.
An explosion at a Tesla Cybertruck in front of the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas resulted in the death of one person and injuries to seven others, authorities said. The vehicle contained gasoline and camp fuel containers, as well as large firework mortars.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that investigators have identified the person who rented the Cybertruck, which was purchased in Colorado, but they are not ready to reveal that individual's identity until they have absolute certainty.
The truck was traced through Tesla charging stations by investigators, who first detected it at about 7:30 a.m. in Las Vegas using license plate readers. It then traveled up and down Las Vegas Boulevard before stopping at the Trump hotel valet area.
The vehicle exploded within 15-20 seconds of the sheriff adding it.
The sheriff displayed a video of the truck's bed at the press conference, revealing it contained gasoline canisters, camp fuel canisters, and large firework mortars.
The sheriff pointed to the exterior of the truck and noted that it was still completely intact after the explosion.
""The Cybertruck's blast mainly went through the truck and out, limiting the damage inside the valet, as seen in the video where the front glass doors at the Trump hotel were not broken by the blast," McMahill stated."
Seven individuals sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital after the blast did not damage the glass doors.
The investigation into the explosion has led to the relocation of all hotel guests to another hotel.
The FBI acting special agent in charge in Las Vegas, Jeremy Schwartz, stated that their top priority is to obtain proper identification of the individual involved in the incident, similar to McMahill.
The second objective was to ascertain if the blast was an act of terrorism, which is currently being probed by a joint terrorism task force.
The task force comprises law enforcement officials from the region, as stated by the special agent.
"Schwartz stated that we are not doing anything alone and we wouldn't do anything without our partners ensuring that we are all in sync. We have learned from past mistakes and will not repeat them."
Since the beginning of 2025, two deadly incidents involving explosions in major cities have raised suspicion.
On Wednesday morning, a man named Shamsud Din Jabbar drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, resulting in the deaths of over a dozen people and injuries to many more.
The ISIS flag-adorned truck that Din Jabbar drove was rented from Turo, as was the Cybertruck that caught fire in Las Vegas.
The FBI believes that the explosion in Las Vegas was a solitary event, according to Schwartz.
He assured the community that they do not believe there are many people supporting or helping the incident, and there is no other danger to the community at the moment. Over the next few hours and days, they will work to investigate the incident.
McMahill stated that he was unsure if the two incidents were related but would not dismiss the possibility. Additionally, he clarified that the Cybertruck in question did not display an ISIS flag, like the one seen in New Orleans, but all aspects of the incident are being thoroughly examined.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, provided significant information about the locking of the vehicle following its explosion during the preliminary investigation.
Tesla charging stations across the country were captured on surveillance footage with the help of Musk.
The billionaire shared updates about the Cybertruck explosion on his social media platform X.
The explosion was caused by large fireworks and/or a bomb in the Cybertruck's bed, not the vehicle itself. The vehicle's telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion.
""The terrorists chose the wrong vehicle for their attack. The Cybertruck contained the explosion and directed it upwards, and not even the glass doors of the lobby were shattered," he stated in another post."
President Biden also weighed in on the Las Vegas explosion.
"The Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas is being tracked by law enforcement and the intelligence community, who are also investigating any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans. However, at this time, there is no information to report on this matter."
