The Chicago DNC was held in a fortified castle, isolated from reality, while feasting like royalty: former chief.
The 2024 Democratic National Convention did not immediately reveal Chicago's struggles.
The former city police chief criticizes the focus on the 2024 presidential ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, while the attention to Chicago's persistent problems of violence and policy failures is overshadowed.
The DNC being held at the United Center is ironic, according to Gene Roy, the Chicago Police Department's former chief of detectives and a public safety consultant, who spoke to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Despite lifesaving efforts by responding officers, a 7-year-old named Jai'Mani Rivera died after a stray bullet struck him outside his mother's home on Jackson Avenue. Meanwhile, a 16-year-old suspect with a violent history was moving about freely, according to Roy.
""The Juvenile Probation Department, which reports directly to the chief judge of the Cook County Court system, was aware of the offender's violation of home confinement but failed to act, and this is just another example of the problems in Chicago right now," he added."
Chicago's problems are being concealed through "window dressing" during the convention, according to Roy. He compared the optics of the event to medieval royalty, who were shielded from the masses by a castle, while speaking to Planet Chronicle Digital.
"The DNC convention is a demonstration of the Democratic Party's elitism, with politicians enjoying lavish meals and being guarded by hundreds of police officers in a heavily fortified building."

"When I think about it, it reminds me of a king and his court living the high life in a castle in Europe protected by an army while a moat, the two separate perimeters and fences, isolates the castle and the powerful from the reality of life outside."
Officers outside the DNC on Monday evening were shouted at by protesters, but Roy pointed out that they have no choice as their days off have been canceled and their hours have been extended to ensure the event's security.
"They're working a minimum of 12 hours, and that's not including time to and from work," he said. "They're struggling to maintain their households, their families."
He stated that their stress levels increase and their recovery time decreases due to the added burden.
"Do we want our officers to be sleep-deprived, burnt out, and confronting protesters in a volatile situation?"
On Monday, demonstrators broke through a fence and surrounded the perimeter, but were unable to proceed.
"On Aug. 19, a portion of anti-scale fencing along the Democratic National Convention’s outer perimeter near the United Center was breached by demonstrators. However, the inner perimeter was not breached, and there was no threat to any protectees. Immediately after the incident, law enforcement personnel were on-scene and contained the situation."
The Chicago Police Department ordered protesters to disperse after another standoff at Union Park, where they had set up tents. Officers held signs indicating the order.
The Secret Service mandates strict security measures for all national special security events, including the RNC in Milwaukee earlier this year, as previously stated by DNC organizers.
Roy stated that Chicago faces unique challenges in terms of public safety and quality of life, and the officials' denial of crime being a problem in the country only harms the victims and their families.
The protests outside the DNC are not like the 1968 clashes between anti-Vietnam War protesters and city police. Despite this, organizers plan to continue to rally throughout the convention, with demonstrations planned outside the Israeli consulate on Tuesday and a march past the United Center on Thursday as the convention comes to a close.
