The California nudist community is tense after a "terrible" double murder; the neighbor was apprehended.
Daniel and Stephanie Menard's deaths have led to two murder charges against Michael Royce Sparks.
The nudist resort outside of Los Angeles, once a peaceful community, has become a "nightmare" after the neighbor of a California couple was charged with their murder.
"Tony Wiley, 69, said to People, "It's a nightmare. You hear such things on the news, but you never imagine in a lifetime that it would be one of your friends, and in such a bizarre way.""
Residents feel "on guard" after the double murder, as stated by Laurie Riffel, 69.
""We feel like we're always on guard, with a sense of unease about our safety here," she said."
The arrest of 62-year-old Michael Sparks on Aug. 30 for the murder of Stephanie and Daniel Menard at the Olive Dell Ranch in Colton caused a feeling of unease.
Sparks was discovered concealed beneath his house in Redlands on Thursday night following the discovery of the Menards' remains, according to City of Redlands spokesperson Carl Baker.
Police said that officers had to remove the front wall of the house because he was hiding in a 5-foot deep concrete space underneath it.
When police first discovered the suspect, he was found attempting to commit suicide, according to Baker.
According to Baker, he had a rifle and tried to commit suicide when police found him, but the rifle malfunctioned.
The next morning, a cadaver dog was employed to search for the couple's bodies at Sparks' home. Baker stated that "the dog alerted, indicating the presence of a body beneath the house."
Tensions between the Menards and Sparks community over the pruning of a tree that shaded their properties reached a breaking point, according to members of the clothing-optional community who spoke to People.
"Tony Garrett, 63, informed People that he spoke with them and learned about their problem with a tree being cut due to branches encroaching on the Menards' property. However, he emphasized that this is not the only issue they faced."
Tammie Wilkerson, 61, recounted to People how when she first arrived, the man she was speaking with indicated his preferred and disliked neighbors before pointing in their direction and saying, "And I hate those f---ers."
I said, 'Wow, Sparky, that's a bit harsh.' That's when he revealed the tree story. I wondered if there might be other explanations. Perhaps he didn't hate me that much. Only he knows for sure.
"It's unclear whether that was the cause or if he suddenly lost control one day. I'm not certain."
Residents remembered the couple for their warm personalities.
"Michelle Ann Archambault Reese, the couple's friend, told People that they had a lovely little home for the three of them. They had a stunning outdoor patio area where they could relax and unwind. The couple were warm and welcoming, always ready to give a hug. They were simply wonderful people."
Neighbors said Sparks appeared to be more of a loner.
"Garrett stated that he would occasionally see the man, but he mostly enjoyed his hot tub. Despite being somewhat reserved, he was not a bad person, and was similar to the other residents in terms of behavior."
Wilkerson revealed to the outlet that he had always been a nudist and despised the "textile world."
