Teen girl stabbed at Indiana baseball game, illegal immigrant arrested: police
In Indiana, a 26-year-old man was caught while dashing through a cornfield.
An illegal immigrant from Honduras, who had previously been deported, was arrested in Indiana on Sunday after being deemed a person of interest in the stabbing of a teen girl at a baseball game.
A manhunt for Dimas Gabriel Yanez, 26, started on Saturday following the stabbing of a 14-year-old girl at her brother's baseball game in unincorporated Lowell, Indiana, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
According to authorities, the suspect attempted to stab the girl's mother when she tried to help, before fleeing. The teen has since been treated and released from a hospital.
A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered by authorities, who named Yanez as a person of interest and advised the public to treat him as armed and dangerous.
On Sunday, the sheriff's office reported that Yanez was found in the southern part of Lake County after an extensive search.
According to the sheriff's office, Yanez was caught on Sunday afternoon after a sheriff's department officer saw him running through a cornfield.
Law enforcement officials suspect that Yanez was attempting to alter his appearance by cutting his hair in an attempt to evade capture prior to his arrest.
The sheriff's office stated that Yanez had been deported to Honduras in 2018 and may have been involved in criminal activities after returning to the US illegally.
On Sunday, the sheriff's office informed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security about Yanez's arrest.
"Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. expressed his deepest appreciation to all Lake County police officers and law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation and search for the case, stating that he is proud of the cooperation displayed by police officers across the county."
No charges have been filed against Yanez, who remains in custody at the Lake County Jail.
The sheriff's office stated that the investigation is still ongoing and further information will be released when it becomes available.
