I initially believed it was a hoax, but then I heard more gunshots and screaming.
On Wednesday, a 14-year-old student fired a gun in a north central Georgia high school, causing fear and uncertainty among students about whether the incident was real or a drill.
The tragic events that occurred outside the school were confirmed to be real, as four individuals - two teachers and two students - were killed and nine others were injured.
Colt Gray, a 14-year-old shooter, will be tried as an adult, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigations Director Chris Hosey.
On Wednesday afternoon, an incident occurred at a school in Atlanta, which was discussed by FOX 5 with students and parents.
A student informed a reporter that he was uncertain about what was occurring, but then he received a notification on the school's internal communication system to enter a hard lockdown. Afterward, he and other students gathered in a classroom corner, knelt down, and huddled together.
The reporter was informed by another student that they heard a lot of commotion, despite being engrossed in music at the time.
I was listening to Ken Carson on full blast when I heard gunshots and thought it was fake until I heard more gunshots and screaming. My friend pushed me to the ground, and I was like, ‘Oh c--p.’
When the room was opened by police, the students were instructed to raise their hands. Upon exiting the room, they discovered a corpse in a room with a gun, bullets, and blood on the floor.
When students exited the building, they noticed an "AK" on the ground. The authorities have not yet disclosed the type of firearm used by the shooter.
Many students initially thought a student who spoke to the station about active-shooter drills was joking because they happen "all the time."
Another student informed the reporter that there were police everywhere and that it was not a drill. Additionally, the student disclosed that a chase was occurring within the school.
The student stated, "Our math teacher was shot and lay motionless in a pool of blood."
A 10th-grade female student told FOX 5 that she heard gunshots and her teacher left the classroom, returned, and turned off the lights.
When students were released from the classroom, they could see the aftermath of the commotion they had caused.
The mother and daughter, after being reunited following the shooting, shared with the station their emotions upon learning about the school events that affected their daughter.
"It's a terrible feeling," the mother said, as she had a lot of anxiety at first not being able to reach her daughter.
A sophomore at the school spoke about the drill situation, her daughter.
""My mom had told me, ‘I love you,’ and I was scared when I figured out that what they said initially wasn’t a drill, but they later confirmed it wasn’t a drill," the daughter said."
She elaborated on her concern that she might never be reunited with her parents.
