Squatters can negatively impact homeowners in ways beyond the initial housing situation.

The mental health effects of property damage and legal fees can be severe for homeowners.

Unwanted residents living in homes have caused emotional stress for homeowners, as their experiences can be difficult to comprehend.

Darthula Young, a Chicago woman, previously spoke to Planet Chronicle Digital about a squatter who resided in a property she inherited from her mother from September 2022 to July 2023.

The effect of squatters can go beyond finances and court battles. The stressful situation can also be a burden to mental health.  (iStock)

Young previously told Planet Chronicle Digital that it's both emotionally draining and overwhelming.

When I first entered my mother's apartment and discovered squatters had taken over, I was emotional despite expecting to feel nothing.

"I was completely overwhelmed by the process, as I went through it," Young stated. "The individuals I've spoken to who are also facing this situation have expressed the same sentiment. They are also overwhelmed by the circumstances."

When the sense of safety and security in a home is removed, it can negatively impact the brain and body.

According to Alexis Abate, a licensed professional counselor and holistic mindset coach based in New Jersey, our home represents safety in terms of security, stability, and protection from harm when we consider our safety needs.

Arriving home to squatters can cause a feeling of violation, which can lead to emotional stress and physical symptoms such as insomnia, hypertension, and back pain. This puts individuals in a state of fight or flight.

The lasting impact of trauma can occur regardless of its intensity, according to Abate.

"Patti Peeples, a Florida homeowner, previously told Planet Chronicle Digital that squatters who lived in her home for over a month assaulted and threatened her. She still worries about her safety and that of her pets and property because the squatters know her address. This has resulted in residual traumatic stresses for her."

According to Abate, a traumatic event can leave a lasting impact on our brain.

A traumatic event can be difficult to forget and may require assistance.

"Relying on loved ones, family members, community, churches, online resources, social media, and convenient ways to connect with mental health professionals are all valuable options for seeking support."

Seeking solutions that build inner strength and regain control can empower homeowners who have experienced or are currently dealing with unwanted squatters.

Abate stated that grounding oneself and asking, "What can I control in the situation?" has its advantages.

The financial burden of a squatter taking over a homeowner's property can be overwhelming. If you're facing financial stress, seek advice from financial and legal professionals to recover any lost funds.

Contact a local attorney who specializes in real estate litigation to help guide you through a squatting case.

Gaining wisdom through pain is crucial in building confidence and resilience, according to Abate.

The National Institute of Mental Health recommends maintaining movement and regular exercise, healthy eating habits, sufficient rest, and outdoor activities to promote mental health stability.
