Special education teacher quits, expresses regret after controversial video incites controversy.
District leaders stated that the remarks in the video do not align with the district's stance.
A Connecticut special education teacher resigned after a viral video showed her threatening violence and harm to President-elect Trump supporters.
Allegedly, a viral video showed Cheshire educator Annie Dunleavy threatening to "handle" Trump supporters.
"Dunleavy warns in a social media clip that winning doesn't erase the memory of who you voted for, and that testing your gangster skills will result in a stretcher and an end to your life. He emphasizes the seriousness of the situation."
"If you voted for Trump, please delete me, block me, get rid of everything of me, or step to me so I know what's up and can handle you accordingly. Please just come forward, we know."
Dr. Jeff Sloan, Superintendent of Cheshire Public Schools, stated on Monday that he became aware of a Snapchat video over the weekend which purportedly depicted Dunleavy making threats.
Unfortunately, I learned over the weekend that one of our teachers had recorded a private message intended for a group on Snapchat and shared it with others. She was expressing her personal views, not those of the Cheshire Public Schools.
Sloan stated that it is evident that our students and staff cannot continue with business as usual, so they have temporarily removed the teacher from the building until the investigation's outcome.
After issuing his initial statement, Dunleavy has since resigned, as stated by Sloan in a communication to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Sloan wrote to inform that Annie Dunleavy, our teacher who made the social media post I referenced in Monday's email, has announced her resignation from her employment with the Cheshire Public Schools effective immediately.
Sloan stated that the comments in the video do not represent the stance of the school system.
"Sloan stated, "Their actions were hurtful, deeply concerning, and ultimately undermined the faith that our community has placed in us. As a leader of this school system, I feel terrible for the angst that this has caused our community and I look forward to returning our focus on the great work that our educators perform every day.""
The Cheshire Police Department acknowledged the video and is currently investigating the incident.
"An investigation was launched by the Cheshire Police Department after a viral social media post involving an employee of the Town of Cheshire Board of Education came to their attention."
No criminal charges will be filed against Dunleavy, as the police have no additional information about the investigation at this time.
Connecticut state Senator Rob Sampson released a statement criticizing the video, stating that the behavior displayed is unbecoming of a public school teacher and "deeply concerning."
"Sampson stated that such behavior should not be tolerated in any school system. Educators have a crucial responsibility to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their or their parents' beliefs. The video's remarks raise significant concerns about this individual's ability to maintain that standard and safeguard the well-being of students in her care."
He pointed out that the hypocrisy of the radicalized political left, who frequently accuse the right of bigotry and intolerance without evidence, is troubling.
"As a State Senator, I am fully committed to eliminating political bias from our classrooms. Education should equip students to think critically and independently, not to impose personal or political views on them. Unfortunately, incidents like this reveal a troubling hypocrisy from the radicalized political left, which frequently accuses those on the right of bigotry and intolerance without evidence. Accountability should apply across the board," — Connecticut state Sen. Rob Sampson, R-District 80
Sampson wrote a letter to Sloan expressing his concerns about the hostile language and clear threats in the video.
The letter stated that the nature of the remarks required immediate action, as the behavior was beyond unacceptable and sent a damaging message to the community. Disciplinary actions were necessary to clarify that such conduct would not be tolerated within Cheshire Public Schools.
The CEA acknowledged the video and stated that they called for a "civil discussion" and maintaining a positive environment in the schools.
CEA values the right to free speech and respects the diverse opinions of our members. We encourage respectful conversations as part of our democratic process, knowing that emotions can run high after an election. Maintaining a positive environment in our schools is crucial, and we must keep our discussions civil and focused. CEA President Kate Dias emphasized the importance of constructively sharing our views while prioritizing respect, unity, and our shared commitment to educating and caring for our students.
Since then, Dunleavy has apologized for the video and shared her remorse on NEWS 8 WTNH.com by explaining her side of the story.
Dunleavy admitted in an exclusive interview that he regretted posting a message during a moment of high emotion, as it may have given people the permission to enact violence against women. He clarified that he was not going to allow such behavior and would fight back.
"If anyone attempted to harm me, I would defend myself and take action to safeguard myself."
