Rescued woman found hundreds of feet from missing husband in Maine forest.
Pamela Helmstadter and her dog were saved.
A woman was rescued by Maine authorities after she and her husband and their dog went missing in a forest for four days.
On Thursday afternoon in Washington County, Pamela Helmstadter, 72, was rescued while her 82-year-old husband, John Helmstadter, was found dead in the woods nearby, according to local outlet WTMV.
On Sunday morning, the couple and their dog went for a walk in Alexander, following the trails behind their home.
John fell on the trail and couldn't get up, prompting Pamela to leave to seek assistance since she didn't have her cellphone with her.
Sgt. Josh Beal stated that she was more physically capable than he was, so they decided to have her go out and find help while he remained in place.
According to WTMV, a neighbor alerted authorities after noticing that a package left for a couple had remained in the same location for several days.
On Thursday morning, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife launched a search for the couple.
The Maine Warden Service is searching for a missing husband and wife from Alexander, who were last in contact with family on Saturday evening.
On Thursday afternoon, Pamela, who was suffering from hypothermia, was found by a game warden and his K-9 along with their dog.
"Beal stated that when the K-9 team found her, her dog was guarding her and had placed itself on top of her chest. He added that it appeared the dog would do the same at night to keep her warm."
Pamela, alert and aware, informed authorities of her experience during rescue and was subsequently taken to a hospital.
"On Monday, it rained all day and we experienced cooler temperatures, as Beal shared with WTMV. Despite the chilly temperatures, she managed to survive until Wednesday night when it was 27 to 28 degrees."
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife was contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for more details.
